i don't know if this is really the place to ask this question as its semi-off topic, but since it's a female community, i thought i'd give it a shot.

i used to shave with a lady bic -- one of those cheap plastic ones. i'd use just plain soap and water while i was in the shower and come out with about 8 nicks total. but about two months ago, i switched to one of those venus razors. a friend suggested it because the hair on my legs is incredibly coarse, and i have pretty long stubble by the end of the day. so, i started using it, and it worked really well. i dont cut myself at all. but, my right calf suddenly became littered with ingrown hairs. and just my right calf. so far, i've been putting aloe vera gel on them, but they just won't go away. does this happen to anyone else? if so, what other ways can i prevent/treat them?

the community shaved would be a great place to try this question... i dun know how to make a cool link, but that's the exact name of the community :) i had these happen to me and i went to the doctor who prescribed me an antibiotic that only gave me a yeast infection (ugh) lol but she did mention that this sort of thing can be from an infection (which is what she was trying to fix) and that this can be warded off by sterizling your razor in alcohol before using it, always making sure it's clean etc.. then rubbing your legs down with alcohol when you're done... the rubbing down at the end always made me eeky so i didn't do that... i use the new intuition now, and i always make sure to use the extra sensitive shave gel without any fragerances or stuff in it... :) hope this helps!

does intuition work better than venus? that damn little blue goo strip always falls off. but i'm scared to buy an intuition. it looks so bulky and freaky. does it lube well??

i used to use venus then i switched to intuition. i love it! it is a little bulky but it already has the shave lotion on it so you save a step when shaving in a hurry. i have yet to get a nick using it and i've had mine for well over a month.

lolol blue goo strip... yeah, that falls off for me too, but the intuition you hang up to dry, so it doesn't get gooky, and i've found that it works really really well, lubes up well, etc... i was skeptical though... but remember they DO have a money back no questions asked guarentee :)

I use Venus too, it's great! Try exfoliating and body brushing (upwards) before and after shaving. Make sure your legs soak in the bath or shower (it's best in a bath) for at least 15 minutes to soften the hairs. Use hair conditioner to shave with, it's even better that those expensive foams. Tea tree conditioner's the best. Then use a moisturising lotion on your legs (but aloe vera's pretty good), or tea tree oil (it's antibacterial and will prevent any spots where those ingrowing hairs are). Then every day just body brush upwards again.

You need to pull out the ingrown hairs, or else it'll just keep being infected and irritated. Use tweezers, pull them out, then rub aloe or hydrogen peroxide on it. That should lessen the soreness and within a couple of days you won't know you had them!
