Sharp Cramps

For the past couple of cycles my period has changed quite a bit. Mainly it's gotten lighter, but I've also started getting odd cramps. These aren't normal "Ow! My uterus!" type cramps which are just normal, dull-ache-like cramps where the uterus must be, but awful sharp pains lower down which can get really bad. I have no idea why they happen. They seem very un-natural to me and the only reason I think they have to do with my period is that I get them in the middle/late stages of my period after the normal cramps die down, if they didn't happen then then I'd think they were something else because they don't seem to logically be connected to my cycle (unless you count the general area as a link). Has anyone else got this? Anyone know anything about them?

I've had no major life-style changes, other features of my cycle are the same (length, moods etc)... I can't think why this has suddenly started. I've attributed the lightness I've been getting and a slight change in which days are heavy or light to my being a bit more aware and accepting of my period.
