yo.
anyone know anything about the effects soy can have on one's menstrual cycle? i've heard conflicting info and i don't understand it anyway... something about soy containing estrogen?

i haven't seen it have any effects on my menstrual cycle, though i started eating more soy when i went vegan, and the severity of my cramps totally declined. i attribute that to not consuming milk anymore, though...

in japan, they don't even have a word for "heat flash" because those menopausal symptoms aren't common. that's attributed to the high consumption of soy in the diet...

what sort of effects were you wondering about?

effect on cramps = maybe also b/c it's a better source of usable calcium than milk? There have been clinical tests confirming that having more calcium (all month long) can lessen cramps and mood swings.

Liz probably knows more than I do but I think it's not actually estrogen but an estrogen-like component in soy that can ease the menstrual symptoms. Hormones are at their lowest ebb during one's period. I do find that I crave soy when I'm premenstrual so I try to honor that and eat lots of it!

oh! i forgot to mention that non-organic (GM) soy has WAY more phidoestrogens than regular, organic soy does. keep that in mind!
