i have them--

they're not bad-- just incredibly painful.
they're "supposed" to go away on their own, as i was told.
and are completely related to your menstrual cycle.

My one friend in h.s. had them. They weren't that bad. She was just out of school for a week because of the pain.

I had a Pilonidal Cyst (which is in the crack of your ass), a couple weeks ago. Now, THAT is some painful shit.

i have 3-4 per year most of the time...occasionally i have had as many as 8 in one year. i have never had to be treated for them. they go away on their own 99% of the time. when they do the ultrasound, they'll look to see if the cyst has its own blood supply. if it does, they'll want to keep an eye on it to be sure it goes away on its own. most of mine stop hurting around the time my next period starts. sometimes the cyst will rupture, which actually stops the pain...but it may cause a yellowish "discharge" (i HATE that word!!!) for a day or two.

Frequently, ovarian cysts appear as a result of a hormonal imbalance...they CAN go away on their own, but I think whoever said 99% of the time was a bit off. They're not a huge deal, but can get worse/bigger if left untreated or don't diminish on their own. It is very rare that they actually need to be removed, but sometimes hormones will be involved. I was diagnosed with PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome) when I was 17(I'm 22 now), and it's somewhat kept under control by my birth control pills, and therefore I wouldn't really consider myself as "having" PCOS, but it is a fairly common thing and I am aware that going off of the pill could cause issues for me.

At any rate, it's always something best looked at by your gyne, as much as I'm sure you'd love to avoid going. I had an ultrasound done and thats why they put me on the pill...and my life has been the better for it. This may not be an 'easy fix' for everyone, but it could work for you, or something similarly simple.

Hope this helps, and good luck. :)
