can periods just suddenly go "out of whack"?

i took a pregnancy test and im NOT pregnant.. but my period still hasnt come after 2 weeks.. [i think]

is it possible for them to just start being irregular?

I've been menstruating for 27 years.

Every two or three years, I have a span of "irregularity" that lasts for about four months, as I reset to a new schedule. During the intervening months, I'm regular -- it's been every 31 days, every 25 days, every 28 days, just about everywhere in between. But I definitely have to go through what I call my "reset" before the new normal-for-me begins.
