About three months ago my gyno put me on OTC-Lo to help regulate an ovarian cyst. I took the pills for two months but it made me severely depressed. I already struggle with depression and take numerous meds for it. I stopped taking it for this month and things seem to be looking up. I have an appointment with my gyno Sept 11th. I plan on going back on some form of birth control but I'm scared that I will sink back into my depression.

What birth control methods would you suggest?
Has anyone else suffered severe depression when put on BC and which one?

BTW I take 150mg Effexor and 40mg Adderrall

Thanks girls for all your help
Courtney

I was on hormonal contraceptives and antidepressants at the same time before, but the former did not necessitate the latter. Most recently (~2yrs) it was 375mg Effexor and Cyclen (though there were other combinations over the years). I really think if you have had that problem before and your mental health is important to you, you should consider trying non-hormonal forms of contraception. That's just what I would do to preserve my sanity as much as possible. If it could send you into a spiral then is it really worth it? JMO.

i started taking birth control when i was seventeen. i had not too much earlier dealt with pretty severe depression. i started to feel better for like five months and then i went on birth control. it was called 'aleese'. everything was okay for like three months but then i got severely ill. and it seems like after that everything was bad. my libido went down the tubes. i was a REALLY huge bitch. and i was really depressed crying all over the place sleeping too much. eating too little. you know. i didn't stop taking them. i just went to the doctor. told her the problem and she switched me to 'loestrin' i felt really good again for like three months. my libido shot back up. and then i got really ill again. and i started feeling like shit. my libido was worse off than before. i didn't even kiss my boyfriend for like three months. seriously. i was way more depressed than before. and both of these pills were supposed to be 'low dose'. so i have stopped taking birth control all together. my doctor doesn't know yet. it has been about three months. the first period after i stopped taking them i got my very first yeastinfection because of the rapid hormone fluctuation but besides that i feel great. i am still mildly depressed but i think it has to do with a chemical imbalance. and stress management issues.
as far as alternate methods i heard from my aunt that there is a copper ring they can stick up there and they don't know why it works, but it does. and you can leave it in for up to ten years. so i am currently looking in the that. it has no chemicals at all. but if you have had kids and your uterus is not as fit as it used to be she said that it can hurt your partner. in a penis stabbing way. not anything major. ha.

sorry. that was kind of long winded.
