a while ago on tv i heard that people that make pads and tampons put some kind of chemicals to keep you bleeding longer than you should... does anyone know if this is actually true?

no, but there are plenty of other problems with pads and tampons, like dioxins (which are legal but still very harmful) and the bleaching process. not to mention how tampons dry your vagina out and absorb all the natural fluids that need to be present to keep your vagina healthy.
