Hydrogen peroxide works wonders. spray/pour on, let sit, blot gently - repeat as needed. It will get your mattress a bit wet, so you'll need to leave it to air dry (or try focusing a fan over it).
I was thinking the same thing! I use hydrogen peroxide at an animal hospital for dogs when we get blood on their fur while putting in IV's and it works wonders!
There's a stain liquid remover you can buy at Target, Walmart, etc. for blood. I can't remember the name, but it's sold for women who get blood on their underwear from periods. It works great to get any kind of blood out.
Should the above methods fail, you might try an enzyme-based cleaner like the ones sold to remove pet urine. They're good for a whole host of offenses.
