i was wondering if anyone had any information on norplant implants. or maybe if someone could tell me why they dont administer them anymore? im doing a report on contraceptives and they interest me the most because all i have found is that the process is no longer available but if you have already been using it for some time then you can still get replacements, someone please explain >_

In my women's health and reproduction class, we discussed the catastrophic effect if an implant was ruptured. Because of where they put the sticks, they were especially prone to breaking, if, say, an abuser grabbed and shook a woman.

A number of complaints were brought against the company re: side effects and problems with use. At the same time, they got a lot of bad publicity about the fact that there were very few MDs trained to remove Norplant. The bad press from both sides shut them down. They probably could have addressed or spin doctored either complain separately, but having them hit at the same time was too much.

Weight gain, loss of sex drive - a lot of the same complaints people have with depo now.

I think as a product it was just kind of iffy, being one of the first alternatives of its kind. One of my friends had two kids on it too ....

A friend of mine was on Norplant, then had it removed because she wanted to have a baby. She couldn't get pregnant though and had to use fertility drugs. I've heard this was a problem for other women too.

I also heard reports that there was considerable scarring for some women when removing the Norplant.
