I have a few questions...

Has anyone heard of/know of information about menstrual periods being induced by physical trauma? Not necessarily rape, but along those lines. And I also don't mean bleeding from an actual injury, but a full-blown shedding of the uterus's lining because of a physical experience?

My second question is slightly graphic, so I'll put it behind an lj-cut tag. The second one is also motivated purely by curiosity, btw. :)

Second Question: When I am on my period, I usually have very loose...um, stool. I'm curious if anyone knows if this is due to something specifically related to the menstrual cycle (such as hormones, or something) or if it is caused simply by the increased circulation in the lower abdominal area. (Or if it's caused by something completely different?!)

I know my questions are slightly specific and such, so thanks to anyone who knows answers or a medical source that can give me information.

In response to your second question...
I think its fairly common. From what I've read, its caused mostly by muscle cramps in the general region of your bowels. Those same muscle cramps cause your stools to want to exit slightly sooner than they probably should.

I hope I'm not offending anyone (I'm new here) but my friends and I used to call this the "period-shits" and I knew more than a few women who would experience this each month; yours truly included. I work at a women's health center, so you'd think I know the answer to this. I'll ask around and search out resources to see if there is any medical feedback I can give you. My personal theory centers around the increased circulation and muscle movement during my mense.

even tho you're not curious in a "does anyone else have this too" kind of way, i just thought i'd let you know that it also happens to me and to all the womyn around me. i work in the women's center on campus and we had this conversation pretty recently. it was nice to know i wasn't the only one practically pooing myself around that time.

Yeah, it happens to me, too. My younger sister, on the other hand, had full blown diarrea - to the point where she'd miss school at least 2 days out of the month. Then they put her on the pill, and things are much more manageable.

I'm guessing it's the increased circulation and hormones.

And as to the first question - I dated a guy a while ago to where funky shit would happen. The relationship was really screwed up - lots of games and stupid shit - that sometimes we'd have sex and I'd do nothing but bleed for a week afterward. I was on the shot and would ordinarily not have a period at all. Then it got to the point where he would stress me out over the phone and I'd get my period. In short - my uterus is like my cat - if she don't like him, there's something wrong with him. At least in my situation. :)

Yeah, gyn said it was stress. I told boyfriend it was stress - he bitched at me for "telling other people about our problems."

The relationship has since ended, and I feel a lot better.

But, stress from other things can trigger my period - finals, for instance can sometimes make me spot. It has to be really stressful in order for it to be a period. That's how I work sometimes.

I don't do that... but I have noticed I get gassy around that time.

A friend of mine also gets gassy.

I have, um, the reverse problem, especially when my cramps are really bad. (The former causes the latter to be particularly hellish, I believe.)
