Bascially, the jury is still out on whether it has any long term effects. Some say it's beneficial, some say possibly harmful, some say it makes no difference. I skipped my periods for several years, until financial reasons made me stop. If you want to, discuss it with your doctor to make sure it's ok for your body. It doesn't work for every woman, though; some still have spotting, and some have periods anyway.
Personally, I wouldnt intentionally skip a period no matter what anyone else says. Something about forcing yourself to not have periods is so unnatural.
Except that what you get on the pill isn't a real period affected by LSH and FSH, and various other things. It's withdrawl bleeding caused by not giving yourself hormones anymore. The 28 day cycle was created artificially in the development of the pill because it was presumed that women would be more comfortable taking a pill that more closely reflected their usual menstrual cycle. You could have almost any length of hormone pills beyond 21 days and be fine. The primary concern with skipping periods for too long is that women may experience breakthrough bleeding or spotting when the body's desire to shed lining becomes greater than the pill.
