Hey all! I'm SO EXCITED...but a bit nervous.

I ordered my sea sponges. I've heard some good stuff, or at least that they're much nicer than cotton tampons. So I'm excited to use em.

I'm a bit nervous though, just because I've never used anything besides tampons/pads...I've never inserted something like this into my vagina, so yeah. I don't know what to expect. :)

I should be entering the hut within the next few days. This will be my first time using the sponges, so does anyone have any advice? Any sponge-users have any tips for me as a first-timer?

I would appreciate it SO much. Hope to hear from someone soon! ^_^

congrats!

I don't have any tips unfortunately...but my good friend has been using them for about a year now and absolutely swears by them. :)
I think I will be ordering my first set very soon also.

1) Do sew a piece of embroidery cotton or something into the sponge, it makes getting them out MUCH easier.

2) If you get more crmaping than usual when they are in, take them out, trim, and try again.

3) If they feel full, change them. Unlike a tampon, a sponge doesn't form much of a plug, so if it is full and you, say, sneeze, you'll end up with a bit of a leak.

A lot of people like to boil their sponges before the first use, to sterilise them.

Good luck, and enjoy!

hello! i have been using sponges for about a year now and I LOVE THEM... but as the previous poster mentioned, you def. need to squeeze them out when they get full, because you'll leak for sure. it takes a couple of days to get used to that, but once you do, you'll know when they're full and how it feels and you won't leak anymore. i usually wear a pantyliner on the first day just in case, because i'm active and don;t always have time to be running to the bathroom in a timely fashion. =)

don't be afraid to trim the sponges to your personal specifcations, but i would recommend that you trim a bit at a time. what seems like a huge, hard sponge is actually quite pliable when damp. also, i don't attach string to mine, i just reach in and pull it out. but... my sponges all seem to have an end that is pretty conducive to pulling. just remember to relax when you're removing (just like with tampons) and it;s a piece of cake.

as for being in public... this is my biggest issue and it;s really not a big deal, but... i usually carry a plastic bag with me and an extra sponge in case there are a lot of people in the restroom when i need to rinse. my sponges are generally able to fit into the palm of my hand, though, so if there's not a lot of traffic in the restroom, it;s not usually a big deal to be discreet about rinsing. and in some places maybe people are enlightened enough to ask questions if you were to say something like, "I'm coming out to rinse my menstrual sponge now so if you're squeamish, look away." but i can assure you that oklahoma (which is where i live) is not one of those places.

also, you might be a little put off by the odor at first. i never really realised my blood had a smell to it until i began using the sponges. it took me aback at first, but i am now used to it.

good luck! i hope you love them as much as i do. i won't go back to tampons... and i'm saving a bunch of money, too. =)
