So this weekend I started having symptoms of a UTI (urge to pee every 15 minutes, pain, etc). Luckily I had two leftover Sulfa tablets from my last UTI. I also bought cranberry juice and quaffed glass after glass - hours later I felt great.

Last time I saw a doctor about this I was told that UTIs sometimes occur and reoccur frequently in women when they first become sexually active - and then disappear after a few years. Is this true from anyone's experience?

In any case, cranberry juice is now a staple in my fridge ^_^

I got UTIs a lot when I started having sex with my first steady boyfriend. The first one was the worse, the others weren't too bad and I didn't even need to go to the doctor for some. After breaking up with him I haven't had a single one (about 3 years ago). So I would say it's true that they don't occur much after a couple years (more like a few months for me). Occasionally, I'll get some irritation around my urethra after sex, but if I avoid sex few a little while after that feeling it doesn't develope into anything.

Peeing after sex helps.

Cranberry tablets work out cheaper than drinking gallons of cranberry juice, particularly as a preventative measure.

Drinking lots of water is also important.

Sorry to sound dumb...but what is a UTI?

IMPORTANT note about antibiotics for utis

just a note about the medicating:
do not self medicate with antibiotics that way - it's bad for you and for the rest of us. when you get a bottle of pills that are antibiotics, you are supposed to take them all until they are gone, otherwise you run the risk of allowing antibiotic-resistant bacteria to develop, and next time you get a UTI, you will need a stronger drug. as you can imagine, this leads to more and more resistance, and there is a limit to the strength of drugs!
in the same vein you should not take only 2 sulfa pills now, because that is not a full dose and may not get rid of your infection!

sorry, i'm a medical student and i have to say these things. if you think you have a UTI you can self medicate with over the counter uristat or the prescription stuff that turns your pee orange (those who have had utis will know what i mean). those should get rid of the pain entirely, but you need a doctor to prescribe you the antibiotics to get rid of the infection.
p.s. macrobid is best for not getting a follow up yeast infection, if your bacteria is not resistant to it. i always personally insist on it!

p.s. sorry to babble more but i have friends who this is definitely true for. however i haven't heard that they resolve themselves, i had thought that if you had a problem with frequent UTIs it usually persisted. at least for my friend she will get them once or twice a month (she has it down to an art as well), and she has been having sex for quite a few years.
