not actually about menstruation...
Oct. 27th, 2003 04:51 pmSo this weekend I started having symptoms of a UTI (urge to pee every 15 minutes, pain, etc). Luckily I had two leftover Sulfa tablets from my last UTI. I also bought cranberry juice and quaffed glass after glass - hours later I felt great.
Last time I saw a doctor about this I was told that UTIs sometimes occur and reoccur frequently in women when they first become sexually active - and then disappear after a few years. Is this true from anyone's experience?
In any case, cranberry juice is now a staple in my fridge ^_^

Drinking lots of water is also important.

Date: 2003-10-27 05:22 pm (UTC)IMPORTANT note about antibiotics for utis
Date: 2003-10-27 08:01 pm (UTC)do not self medicate with antibiotics that way - it's bad for you and for the rest of us. when you get a bottle of pills that are antibiotics, you are supposed to take them all until they are gone, otherwise you run the risk of allowing antibiotic-resistant bacteria to develop, and next time you get a UTI, you will need a stronger drug. as you can imagine, this leads to more and more resistance, and there is a limit to the strength of drugs!
in the same vein you should not take only 2 sulfa pills now, because that is not a full dose and may not get rid of your infection!
sorry, i'm a medical student and i have to say these things. if you think you have a UTI you can self medicate with over the counter uristat or the prescription stuff that turns your pee orange (those who have had utis will know what i mean). those should get rid of the pain entirely, but you need a doctor to prescribe you the antibiotics to get rid of the infection.
p.s. macrobid is best for not getting a follow up yeast infection, if your bacteria is not resistant to it. i always personally insist on it!
