ive brought this up in a few other communities, but havent gotten any really helpful feedback, so i figured id try once more.

im 18, and have had my period for 6 years. never, ever has it been regular. i think -once- it was consistantly 6 weeks apart for 2 cycles. but thats it, and that must have been 3 years ago. i will frequently go 3 or 4 months without my period.

when i brought this up to my doctor, he told me that i would probably never be able to conceive because of this, and put me on orthotricyclin [that is spelled wrong, but whatev.]. the problem is that ortho gave me intense migraines, the worst ive ever had, EVERY DAY that i wasnt actually on my period. i refuse to go through that again.

has anybody else had similar experiences as far as being regular? or getting migraines from the pill?

I've heard of problems with the pill, like migraines, that can sometimes be cleared up with a different dosage or brand (there are tons.)

I think it's unfair of your doctor to tell you that you won't be able to conceive when you're only 18 - many women don't have regular periods until their twenties, but have conceived (sometimes accidentally.)

My vote is for a second opinion.

I second that! my periods weren't regular from the time i was 13 till i was 22. They are _just now_ regulating. I'd go 3,4,5 months without them. Everything else pointed to me being fine, so i just documented them and got my regular check ups. This doesn't necessarily mean you can't conceive at all! Unless you have a specific medical condition, that you're not telling us about, i'd get a second opinion.

as for Ortho...it hijacked my body and I don't take it. There are other types of pills and it may only be a matter of changing your prescription. If not, talk to your doc about other options.

did your doctor diagnose you with anything specific? i'm not irregular in the way you are, so i don't have firsthand info, but i've seen things on the mum.org website saying that having infrequent, irregular periods can be a sign of polycystic ovary disease. just a thought, in case you hadn't looked into that one at all.

I have had my period since I was 13, I am 32 now,and it has NEVER been regular. I would skip three or four months only to bleed for the next six months. It was horrible. The only way that I am regular is on birth control pills. I take Trivora-28 and they work for me. Every woman is different and maybe the Ortho was not for you, I wouldn't quit with just one type. I know how much migraines hurt so I understand about being cautious about trying other pills. As far as being able to conceive, that is another story altogether. Not being regular may make it more difficult to pinpoint when you are ovulating, but unless there is something else going on then you should be able to conceive. I would get a second opinion.
