Hey everyone, I am looking for some advice, and this looks like the community that might best be able to help me... I just bought a Diva Cup, and this is my first period using it. Day 3, and I still haven't gotten the hang of it. I can't seem to get it in there so as not to still have a small amount of leakage (not enough to really stain, just enough to make me feel gross all day). I think maybe it is up too high for my particular internal shape, but I don't want to have the stem sticking out... I have heard some people say that trimming the stem helped, but I don't know... Should I? How do I know how much to trim?

I really want this to work out for me...

I don't have a Diva, I have a keeper, but I'll do my best. You should definitely ask in [livejournal.com profile] the_keeper. Trimming is a good idea. Trim little bits; you may discover that trimming it all the way off is what works. And it seems that some people can take a long time to get used to it, like up to two or three cycles. Also, sometimes that small amount of leakage may just be residue in the vagina that is below the cup. Sometimes I get little flecks of blood but I usually ignore it.

Stick with it. You'll find a way.

First of all, I think that the stem shouldn't be trimmed as it's rather short as is. The Keeper has a much longer stem, but a shallower cup.
If you're leaking, I'd think it has to do with how you're inserting it. You should fold it in half to make sure it goes all the way up to your cervix (sounds harder than it is) and then rotate it a quarter or a half turn untill it unfolds all the way. Pinch it so that it actually has some suction in it--you will notice when you go to remove it that it will need to be pinched again to release the suction.
If none of this works for you, then you may have gotten the larger of the two sizes and you need the smaller of the two.

I've been using my DivaCup for almost six months and never had a leak. I've also discovered that it does take some practice to insert it properly--sometimes it just doesn't feel right, but withpractice, you will get the hang of it. Good luck!
