Hi, I'm new to LJ but in the short while I've been here, I've been doing a lot more looking around than posting. I've decided it's time, and this is the first community I'm posting in. Obviously I'm a guy, but menstruation fascinates me, as do many things about the female body and mind. I hope this will turn out to be an interesting community and hey, I'm always up for learning new things. :)

I have to admit that it’s kind of weird to have something called a menstrual hut that was formed by a man. I operate under the assumption that men are possibly/probably reading something, too, if it’s online. I tend to think of a “Menstrual Hut” as a place where women go to be away from men during their time of menstruation. Obviously, this community isn’t just for companionship, it’s for information. Still odd. I don’t know why I hadn’t realized that you were a man.

Was this community founded before the vaginapagina community? You mentioned that when you founded it there weren’t any communities for women to discuss these issues.

The Hut is about six months older than VP... When I was researching women's communities on LJ, it was February of 2001, and there really wasn't anything easily found. I'm very happy with how the community turned out.. there was a very real need for a place like this. We had hundreds of members inside a few months and the people have been very helpful to one another. I'm glad that I can sit back, and watch the community grow and prosper with minimal housekeeping chores on my hands.

You might be surprised to note that the Museum of Menstuation ( http://mum.org ) was also founded by a man.

I knew that the museum of menstruation was founded by a man. I found it odd, but I didn’t think anything of it. I think it’s the title the “menstrual hut” that threw me off the most here. That brings to mind a very female-only space. As I said, I didn’t think that this WAS female only (after all, anybody can read it!).

I don’t remember if I said it before, but I like this community. I’m not complaining that the founder is male. I’m just saying that it feels weird to me that a “menstrual hut” was founded by a man, that’s all.

Thanks for the compliment! I saw a need and ran with it.

Welcome aboard! I've learned a lot since this place got rolling.

The basic rules are simple here.. any civil, non-insulting discussion of menses and women's health / reproductive / sexuality issues in general.

Please forgive me for not noticing this community was initiated by a man... my roomie got me hooked up and I joined well before I fully understood LJ (and I am still learning)... Anyway, forgive me if I am being too forward or asking too personal a question, however, I am curious to know what inspired you to begin a community for women's reproductive issues?

In keeping with respect and honor, I shall tell you a little about why I'm here, though you'd think it obvious. I'm not much of an internet user and am quite oblivious to a lot of the stuff out in the cyber world, but my roommate was hooked up and kept sending me links from the menstrualhut and to make a long story short I joined LJ to see things for myself. I am particularly interested in bringing the spiritual side back to women's menses and sexual healthcare. I think we hate ourselves and our periods too much these days. Anyway, I am curious about your choice to begin this community and hope I am not breaking any boundary taboos. Thanks!

Happy to share. :)

My girlfriend and I were surfing the Museum of Menstruation site ( http://mum.org/ ) a few years back, and I got to thinking that a community focusing on the same topic would be useful and interesting. After looking and not finding anything at the time, I founded the hut. I'm interested in the subject, so it was win-win.

It's grown by so many leaps and bounds, now, with many regular contributors and readers... far more successful than I'd initially imagined!

Thank you for starting it!

Yup, quick and easy.

It was a shock to me that nobody else had made one on the same topic that was easily accessible.

There are a large number of other women's special-interest communities now, and it feels good that this one may've had some small part in the formation of those, as well.

I've been very blessed by folks here that are genuinely inquisitive and helpful, and *very* few trolls have come through.

I think it's wonderful you're interested in menstruation. Too many guys are freaked out about a natural female process.
