My period started today (of course) and I summoned up the courage to try my new tampons out (remember me? first time tampon user?) and you know what? It worked! No problems or anything! I'll admit I'm slightly worried about getting it out, even though I know it's an irrational fear (I have visons of the string breaking and the tampon being stuck in there, but I could always dig it out anyway).

I have to say you ladies were right: I do perfer these to pads. I'm not worried about leaking my favorite undies, nothing feels weird, and I feel even more protected, if that's possible. It was a bit tricky to stick it in the first time, but I've gotten the hang of it. Now I'm wondering: are non-carboard applicator tampons better? Do any of you have special perferences?

Thanks for all your pervious advice, just wanted to let you know everythings going great with my new protection!

I find the plastic ones with the rounded tips far more comfortable to use; I'm a Playtex fan. :)

I'm actually a fan of the OB tampons without an applicator. I feel more in control when I'm using them, of getting the tampon in correctly and such. I'm not sure I'd have felt that way when I first started using tampons, but I did find they leak less than any other tampon I've ever used.

The big difference was making sure that the tampon had a rounded applicator, not a blunt one like the tampax I first had.

i always used the cardboard ones because i can just flush those. i use cardboard ones that don't have a bit of cardboard on the top (just rounded tampon cotton sticking out) and i find those alright to use. they also make them with the cardboard at the top, to make it a little easier to slide in, and i used those when i was younger and had more trouble getting them in.

it just seems easier to flush everything down the toilet rather than use an applicator, get it kinda bloody, and throw it in the trash.

Congratulations! Next step is the Keeper or DivaCup. ;-)

Just in case you don't know, never flush tampons or applicators (even cardboard) into a septic tank, or you could clog it.

i remember when i first started using tampons... i had that fear of the string breaking or something, but i got over it pretty fast.
i think the plastic applicators are easier to insert, so i like them, but the cardboard ones are ok too. you should try both and see which kind you like more.

When I used tampons, I liked the really skinny ones with the plastic applicator. Playex Ultra Glide maybe? I think that's what they're called. They were great for a girl just starting to menstruate.
