menstrual cup wars
Nov. 16th, 2003 10:07 pmHello, new here. Thought I'd start off posting an entry from my journal this summer about the menstrual cups I know many of you know and love. Hope you don't mind the recycling :)
I use the Keeper, which I bought towards the end of last summer. I'm very happy with it, and it would seem, like every other user, I've become a bit evangelical about it. But that's not what this entry is about.
This past year was my cousin's first year as a student in Dublin and over IM the other night, she started asking me about menstrual cups because she'd decided she was fed up with the lack of selection in tampons in Dublin, and was thinking about trying one.
I said I was happy with my Keeper, but if I'd known about it at the time, I might have bought the British made silicone version, sold as the Mooncup, because I think silicone might be a better material for this sort of thing. Before I'd passed on the URL, she'd googled "mooncup" and saw, yet another competitor in the sponsored links: another new silicone version sold as the Divacup, which turned out to be made in Canada and significantly cheaper (we're Canadian).
At some point, I went looking at the various sites I knew about in connection with the Keeper, since it had been around the longest and most of the customer info for it was relevant to all the cups.
On the manufacturer's site, www.thekeeperinc.com, I saw a note that said, "Health Keeper, Inc., formerly the Canadian Distributor of The Keeper, is no longer affiliated with our company and will no longer be selling our product."
Hmmm. Did I detect a pissy undertone in that statement?
Sure enough, www.keeper.com was selling the Divacup! How weird is that? It feels like something in the universe should implode when something is marketed as "a superior, less expensive" version of the competitor and the competitors name is in the company's name and URL.
I'd be really interested in any dirt there has to be regarding this bizarre situation.
Well, I never did find out if there was any dispute going on about the use of the name Keeper, but my cousin loves her DivaCup as much as I love my Keeper.

Date: 2003-11-18 08:32 pm (UTC)I'd never actually gone to either site, though. I'd always referred to http://www.thekeeper.com If you ever find out what happened, I'd be interested in seeing another post about it here or even in thekeeper community (if you don't mind!)
