ok so yesterday morning i woke up and found i had started my period. so i put ita *reg* tampon and went about my business. when i got home from school, i had realized that my flow was too heavy and had soaked thru the tampon and onto my brand new underwear. i dont want my mom to know that i basically ruined my new pair, so if after she starts the wash and i throw it in, will it get rid of it or not. is it too late to do anything about it, or am i stuck with the stain forever?

soak it in COLD water- as cold as you can get it. that will lift the stain enough that throwing it intot he wash should get rid of it almost entirely.

Well, now you've likely got at least some staining. If you'd soaked them as soon as you'd gotten home, you'd be fine. I'm sure there's probably some magical blood stain removal serum these other lovely ladies can tell you about, but in the future, your best bet is soaking anything bloodstained first thing.

cold water soaking is best.

you could try some hydrogen peroxide, too, that might still work if they haven't been washed in hot water, nor dried.

ammonia. greatest stuff in the world. soak the stain in it until it starts to fade a bit, then throw it in the wash.

Depending on how bad it is, you might want to check it before it goes in the dryer....but that should take care of it.

I don't just soak them in cold water - I scrub 'em with some soap. If you've got a nail brush or something, you can use it. Otherwise, just scrub 'em by rubbing the cloth against itself with a soap. Sometimes I do it for quite a while before it works. If you scrub 'em for a while and nothing happens, let 'em soak if you can.

In the future, the sooner you do it after this happens, the more likely you'll be to get the stain out. If yo do it immediately, it always comes out. After it dries, it just depends on how much longer it's been since it dried...

In the future, you might want to wear a pantyliner backup to avoid this from happening. I used to change my tampon a couple of times during the day, too. This helped avoid any leakage issues.

i also agree that scrubbing with soap is a good way. i'm surprised everyone said cold water... my mom always told me cold water sets stains in... then again what do i know about laundry.
i have had some luck with specific stain removers for blood but usually if the stain is set in at all, like if you didn't try to scrub it in the sink right away, then they just turn it to a lighter color stain.
i am also a fan of the tampon plus pantiliner method. come to think of it i wear a pantiliner almost everyday. i hate messing up my underwear for any reason, and if anything funny goes on i know i don't have to run out of a room backwards.

no, the other way around... hot water sets stains (as does the heat from running clothes through a dryer). Just an FYI.

That said, I also recommend cold water soak and soap scrub.

Oxi-Clean works wonders for me. It even got out a stain from underwear that had been washed a few times. I just let it soak overnight and then throw it in the washing machine.

Cold water and soap scrubbing definately...

Otherwise, quite randomly, pineapple juice works wonders on blood. My sister uses it regulary for nosebleed stains...

My daughter has had very good luck with shampoo and cold water.

I just keep a few pairs of older undies to wear during that time and don't worry about stains so she knows better than I would.
