Ok, to everyone who read and responded to my earlier post here I wanted to clear up a few things:

I can't really talk to my parents about needing birth control because I'm having sex. They'd flip out. I did talk to my mom about needing birth control for my period, and it's all ok now. I would tell them the truth, but while I'm living in their house and using the car they provide for me, I really don't want them to ban me from seeing my boyfriend. They are very bad about sex conversations, and I don't feel like going through that with them, especially since we aren't on wonderful parent-daughter terms as it is. I understand that most people have parents who would rather have that talk than just not know, but my parents aren't that way. Telling them I'm having sex is like asking them to kick me out of the house.

My dad isn't the only pharmacist, but his company is the provider of our health insurance, so to get my prescription filled for a lot cheaper, I have to get it filled at a Walgreens. Problem is, Walgreens keeps a file for every customer that is on the network. I can't get away with it by getting it filled at another Walgreens because my dad will still see it when he goes to fill a future prescription.

I appreciate all the feed-back, and I am making an appointment with my doctor to get on the BC. As a side question, how many of you gained weight when you got on BC, and on average, how much weight did you gain?

Thanks :)

check out planned parenthood.
there should be one in your area, they charge on a sliding scale, and your parents wouldnt have to know.

I second the Planned Parenthood. As for weight gain, I maybe gained two pounds. Maybe some girls gain a lot of weight, but the brand of pill might not be right for them or some other underlying problem. You are far more likely to have bad side effects like weight gain from Depo Provera shots.

I am sensitive to the hormones in the pill. I have tried many and there is not one that I didn't end up gaining weight on. Unfortunately gained 30 pounds on one of them. The rest weren't that bad but the weight gain still added on. However this is not normal for the majority of users of the pill. I just happen to be lucky enough to be super sensitive to the hormones in them ;-)

Just curious, did you have any trouble getting back to your usual weight when you got off the pills?

And for Emily, I did not gain any weight when I went on the pill and nothing happened when I went off, either.

Well if you gain 30 pounds it isn't all water weight so it takes a while to get it off again. I'm working on it :)

I was originally on straight Ortho for about two years and I didn't have any weight problems until I went off of them. I gained about ten pounds or so. I changed to the patch and didn't gain or lose... just maintained. But I took the summer off of the patch as well (didn't have enough money to keep up with it and I'm 22 so Planned Parenthood didn't really offer anything cheaper than what I was already paying) and I just started it a month or so again and now I'm losing weight. I think it just depends on the intensity of the hormones in the particular BC you're taking.

i started taking birth control about 2-3 years ago, something called ovcon 35... at first they only offered a swallow pill, but i'm hearing something about a new chewable tablet? anyways, i think i gained about 10-15 Ibs. It depends on the person, but normally i hear about people gaining weight more than losing. Whatever you do, go for the pill, not the shot. There tends to be serious problems with shots.

I gained weight when I started BC, but I also made several lifestyle changes at the same time. I started working at a grocery store, which means easy access to shit food, and stopped my exercise regime. I gained about 30 pounds in six months, and another 20 in the following year.

However, I lost weight on BC, and haven't lost since I've been off. So I don't know how much to attribute to the pill. Every person is different, so there's no way to know if you would or wouldn't gain based on others.
