An update on my previous post ...

I got my period today, two and a half weeks after I'd expected it. It seems normal so far, although I'm a little crampier and sorer than usual.

However, I'm posting because of my doctor's visit yesterday. She said pretty much what y'all have said: that there could be many reasons my period was late, and that there wasn't necessarily anything wrong. And by yesterday I was pretty willing to believe that; I was content to just wait for my period to start.

She gave me a prescription for Provera, which she said mimics the hormones of the second half of your menstrual cycle; after taking it (for a week, I think, or maybe two), you should start your period within a few days.

The Provera is the thing I'm wondering about. I'd gone through Our Bodies, Ourselves, and it did say that doctors can give you medication to "bring on" periods; but it wasn't really in favor of them. So I was planning to come here and ask for input on Provera, but it turns out that now I don't need it. Still, I'd like to hear a little bit more about it.

Who's taken Provera, and how did you react to it?

I took something similar and it sucked! I did indeed get my period after taking it for a week and continued to get my period for 3 months after that. The doctor finally decided this wouldn't sort itself out on its own and she put me on the pill for a month to stop the bleeding. That worked and she said I would get a normal period at the end. That's where I am at the moment. Let's hope I don't keep bleeding >_

well, provera is a progestin, like progesterone, which is one of the main ingredients in BC pills. to me it seems like probably the same as taking the end of a triphasic BC pill... i mean if you are worried about your health i think that the risks and side effects are similar to that... and it seems to me usually when you get on the pill, after you get off it it takes a while to get back to normal. anyway... all it's supposed to do is tell your uterus to make its lining and shed it, so there's nothing strange about that, but if you're fine with just waiting for it and you're concerned about your cycle maybe having some other irregularities, maybe you want to just hang and have some parsley tea?

I took provera a couple times .. I didn't have any reaction/side-effects to it, other than maybe a slightly stronger period/flow than usual. Then again, I didn't have any side-effects/reaction to being on birth control either, so maybe its something that I don't react to? Have you been on the pill ever? Did you have any side-effects?

I didn't see your previous post at the time, but did you have a cold in the past month? In December, I had a cold and it delayed my ovulation, and therefore my period.. I was two weeks later than I should have been.

I'm just glad my body has gotten itself back on track!

I know exactly what you mean! :) I've had my period every month since October or November.. Never before has it been that way. Suddenly I can tell when I'm ovulating and approximately when my period will come. I kinda like it. (But it only took 13 years and 3 kids to get that way... ;)

I was prescribed Provera about a week ago. My periods are really irregular, and I'd decided I wanted to try taking birth control pills. Because I had not had a period for two months or so, the doctor had me take 5 days of Provera (two 10mg pills per day) to get it started. I finished the 5th day yesterday, and am just waiting around for my period now. I don't really know what to expect- I wonder if my period will be heavier/more painful. I also wonder when it will start. While taking the Provera, I noticed a few side effects- I broke out on both cheeks a little, had some cramping in my abdomen, and I also noticed that I became nauseous at the same time every day. Nothing really unpleasant, though- it was tolerable.
