Last weekend I went to the Alps for a long weekend (I live in France) with my friends to celebrate the end of first semester. It didn't occur to me to bring along any "supplies" because I wasn't due for another few weeks, but sure enough on the first day, I was in the bathroom and realized my period had come. There were two guys and two girls on this trip and my friend Sarah didn't have anything either. To make things better, we were pretty secluded up in the mountains, a fifteen minute drive into town and we didn't have a car, we'd just brought enough food for the weekend.

I had to use my socks to soak up the blood. It was so awkward and I felt like I was wearing a diaper. Also, I stained my socks. However, it was much softer than a pad and there wasn't any of that icky chafing.

So, just a warning ladies; always bring something with you just in case.

A wise word indeed. I ALWAYS have in my pocketbook and backpack, in case, no matter what since you never do know.

Have you considered cloth menstrual pads? They’re much more comfortable than the disposable pads (soft flannel instead of weird synthetic disposable pad material!), and unlike a sock, they’re built to fit comfortably between your legs. That wouldn’t have helped you on a weekend away from home, but they’re not at home (I usually bring some disposable pads when I’m traveling!).
