Well, here I am, another day of school interrupted because of my period.

I've had really bad periods for over a year now, and you think I would be used to dealing with intense cramps that have caused vomiting before, but noooo! I'm not. I go to the doctor, and the only thing she has given me is Ponstel (that did NOT work) and she said next time she's going to try arthritis medication. Well, that's my pediatrician.

I'm thinking about going to the gyno. See, my problem is this: I've never just had these bad of cramps, this pretty much started when I became sexually active. I'm only 15, so I'm thinking, "Oh boy, I had sex, and now it's making my insides go nuts because they're still developing." I don't know if that's the case, but this seriously needs to stop because it affects me constantly. I just want a remedy!

So if anyone thinks they have an idea of what exactly is going on, please post... I'm going to talk to my mom today and ask her if she can get me to the gyno.. I don't really care if it's going to be "embarassing" because this really f@#$!ing hurts! (No pun intended.) Any theories or whatnot will be much appreciated :)

Have you tried taking two Advils and laying down with a heating pad (or hot water bottle) over your abdomen? If you don't have either of those, a hot bath sometimes helps. Advil gets rid of pain pretty well but you could also use Midol or Motrin or something along those lines. I'm a little superstitious about using aspirin during the bleeding, but maybe someone else will have input about that.
Hope you feel better soon!

A couple of thing. Like the previous post mentioned, heat can really help to relax a cranky uterus. I've also had good luck using Aleve (often taking 1 followed by 1 about an hour later, then 1 more in about 8 hours - that's the max dosage for a day). I've had bad cramping as well for most of my adult life and have found a few other helpful remedies - ginger tea, made with fresh ginger steeped in hot water (and a touch of honey! mmmm) great for reducing some of the edge of cramps (or steep the ginger in hot raspberry tea for an extra boost during your period). And, weird as it may sound, when I'm having cramps, if I can find a private place, humming through the cramps really really works for me....just one note sustained...it sounds weird but it really does work (I hear this also works for women in labor to a degree).

Now that you are sexually active, you SHOULD be going to the gyn for regular checkups. You may also want to inquire as to whether there is a birth control pill that may help to moderate you period and reduce cramps, and also ask to be checked for endometriosis which can make not only periods, but sex as well, quite painful. It's a condition that is treatable, more so when caught early.

If you've had serious c ramps for over a year, seeing a gyno is a very good idea. T here are lots of things that could be making them worse. It's probably not connected to being sexually active.

Since it's a good idea to go after you've become sexually active anyway, it's just a double-care-for-yourself bonus!

Oh, you mentioned that you were 15. If your mom's gone into the room with you for past appointments with your pediatrician, you may want to ask that she at least not be in the room for a portion of your gyno appointment so that you can talk with the doctor openly about being sexually active as well as talking about your cramps.

Good luck!

As others have noted, I'd like to reiterate that it's very important for you to go to a gyno now that you are sexualy active. Though unlikely you may have picked up an STd and should be checked out for that as well as the other, more common problems, that could be causing this.

I have had a horrible time with my period since I first got it when I was 14. I would get cramps so bad that it hurt to even breathe. I would try everything and anything you could think of to just be able to function and nothing worked. It was suggested numerous times to me to go on birth control to see if that helped but I just didn't like the idea of extra hormones in my body.

After 6 years of torture I finally gave in and went on the pill and it's the best thing I have ever done for myself. It regulated my 37 day cycle to 28 days, and my 8 day long periods are now roughly 3. I still get cramps sometimes, but they aren't anything that won't go away with an advil.

I highly suggest talking about this option with the gynocologist or have him or her tell you some other options.
