Hello, new to the community!

I'm currently on my period. I've been on Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo for several months now (I'm about to start my 5th pack.) I'm not sure if I should direct this question to [community profile] birthcontrol or not, but I figured I'd try here because I'm seeking an opinionated response.

Anyway, been on those pills for awhile now, for cramp relief, and period regulation. I have a boyfriend; we're waiting to have sex. While my period is more regular (I get it during the time I'm supposed to, when I'm on my inactive pills) but the cramps are still pretty rotten, and I lose interest in food, and most activity. I end up drained and nauseated, as I was prior to these pills. I mentioned this to my doctor, and he said if I didn't see significant changes after my 4th pack, he'd put me on a different sort of pill (I'm sorry that I don't recall the name) that would just prevent me from having a period at all. I don't really like that idea.

So, what do you think I should do? Ask to be put on a similar pill? Or should I bear with this pill, though it hasn't done much? Have any of you been on a pill that prevents you from having a period? If so, what did you feel about that?

Explain that you still want to get your period, but that you'd like to try a different dose/mix of hormones. :) We're all different and different brands work better for different people. Desogen made me angry and violent, OTC (not OTC-lo) made me depressed and melancholy, Estrostep didn't affect my moods, but didn't help my period, etc... and yet another one left me naueseated all the time (I ate ginger constantly to cope). Some people do great with all of those, some do not.

It might take you awhile to find a pill which works for you. You might not find one, or you might find one which is great. :) Some women like taking a monophasic pill constantly so that they only bleed every few months--there's even a pill marketed for that purpose now. If your period is disabling, you might want to consider that. Frankly, I like the ritual of bleeding, even if it hurts like hell and screws up my digestive system. I feel cleansed afterward.

Eventually, I gave up the pill altogether, btw.

I don't have any experience with stopping my period entirely, but I thought I'd offer a word of encouragement. I also went on the pill because of my cramps, and it did take a few cycles before I was really largely pain free, so don't despair if it hasn't entirely worked out in three cycles, though if it doesn't make *any* difference after the 4th pack, I second the idea to give another formulation a try. However, if you loose patience with trying different things, getting no period is certainly an option.

The other good news is that after three years on the pill, I stopped to see if I still had cramps, and they were indeed gone.

note: the pill that prevents you from having your period is called seasonale, if you'd like to do some research on it. as far as i know there have not been any negative effects associated with that, and you do actually have a period every 3 months i believe even with that pill. i've skipped my periods before with other kinds of pills that mimic seasonale, and i had no problems with that, it was great not to have that awful feeling i always get when i'm bleeding, plus i get really heavy periods.
