Here is my vent about sex and my Monthly Monster (and yes, I am "in the hut" right now).

I'm 22 with a degree in Women's Studies, so generally I do my best to view my period as a GOOD, positive event (even though I refer to it as my Monthly Monster!).

What I don't like (other than cramps) is how my period messes with my sex life. My boyfriend and I spent the night at a friend's place last weekend and since we don't live together it should've been the perfect time for some much-needed sex. But because my period was on the verge of starting (or had already started - my Keeper was inserted so I couldn't really tell), no such luck. I've read lots of posts in a number of communities about having sex during a period, and I'm seriously considering giving it a try because I'm just getting so frustrated with having my already-limited sex life interrupted each month. I know menstruation is a wonderful thing, but it's such a pain to have sex ruled out for 5-6 days each month because my period's arrived.

Maybe I'm only frustrated because during our last sleepover at our friend's place, I was fighting an awful cold and therefore sex was a bit difficult coz I was all congested. Then during THIS sleepover I was crampy and about to start bleeding. Both of us have been good-natured about these "interruptions", but I for one am getting really frustrated.

End of vent.

On a side note: can someone please remind me how to figure out if I have a 21 or 28-day cycle? Thanks!

To determine how long your cycle is you count from the first day of one period to the first day of the next one.

I've personally never had any problem with having sex during my period - in fact, I find it helps with cramps. And most guys I've been with haven't had a problem either, tho some do. Make sure to stick a towel under you :). However, if you or your partner is kinda squicky about the idea, consider getting a diaphragm. When you have it in, it collects the menstrual fluid much like a keeper, but doesn't get in the way of sex. YAY!

Similarly, Instead disposable cups can be used like that - they are like the keeper in that they are designed to sit up by your cervix and collect the blood but not long like the keeper more diaphragm-shaped

Sex on your period is a godsend. Cramps are definitely taken care of and orgasms are good for that, too. Even if you're not having sex, you could still get off or something.

It's not scary. It's just a cultural taboo. Overcome and embrace your sexy self! You're still sexual even when you have your period. :c)

Enjoy!

There are LOTS of ways to have sex when you’re bleeding.

1. You can wear your Keeper and have lots of yummy sex with no penetration.
2. You can wear your Keeper, have lots of yummy sex and remove it just before penetration, just putting a towel down to avoid staining anything *laughs*
3. You can wear nothing and just be on a towel the whole time.
4. You can use Instead disposable menstrual cups (this usually works best if you put in a new cup before you start getting sexual or before penetration b/c they’re more likely to leak if they’re full – I found that having a safety towel down “just in case” was necessary for us, but not all women need it).
6. A diaphram works just like an Instead cup for catching blood – however, even with perfect use the effective rate is in the high 80 percentile so if you’re using it for birth control, you may want to consider using a second option. (My doctor actually found out I was using cups and offered to fit me for a diaphram so that I could use them as blood catchers and not have to buy Insteads to have penetration sex, but I prefer to just use my DivaCup and then switch to a sponge for intercourse).
6. You can use sea sponges (but for intercourse, be sure to tie the dental floss to it so you can pull it back down after it gets shoved way up high!!!!)

As far as counting your cycle, I just start with day one of my period as day one of my count. Then whatever day I start my period is the next day one.

So if I started my period on Monday, March 1 then that would be day 1. Then if I started bleeding on March 31, that would be day one and my cycle would have been 30 days.
