I've already been bleeding for a while but have been reluctant to crawl back into the hut... probably because I am *bitter*-- mid-cycle I had an exciting outbreak of spotting that turned into full-on "breakthrough bleeding." The side effects insert in my birth control makes it sound like nothing, almost celebratory-- Wow! A breakthrough!-- but I was not amused. This is my first month on new pills so I'm not worrying (*yet*) especially since I <3 my new pill so far-- I feel just like myself with it, plus my skin may actually be clearing up (woo!).

Is there a breakthrough bleeding expert in the hut?

I had breakthrough bleeding in December, halfway through my cycle. Went to a gyn that could fit me in on an emergency basis (as it got a lot heavier literally in one day) who wasn't very good. Ended up going to another one who was much better, tested me to make sure I didn't have any STDs as she said that can be one cause. She then explained that when the person doesn't have an undiagnosed STD and wasn't pregnant (which I couldn't have been), breakthrough bleeding is most often just the body expelling old built-up blood. Mine started out as spotting like yours did, by the way.

*raises hand*
I never fail to breakthrough bleed, even on birth control -- BUT, there is ONE birth control pill that I can take that helps prevent it (I still had it occasionally, but it was definite improvement!) -- that's LO-OVRAL-28 -- my doc said it's the best pill for breakthrough bleeding they have...

I know that it is a monocyclic pill - it's only one hormone throughout the month ... I'm not sure if it's "low dosage" or not (I'm actually not on it at the current moment, I'm able to have a baby any day now...)
I tried orthotricyclen and some of the other mixed hormone pills, and I was so moody I couldn't even put up with myself. I couldn't seem to lose any weight, either (though I wasn't gaining any)...
when I got on LO-OVRAL, I was able to lose some weight, stop the moodiness, and regulate my cycle (bring the breakthrough bleeding under control)...
yes, I shamelessly promote this pill. *smile* it really helped me out!

last time i went on the pill, i had breakthrough bleeding for the first 3 months. then it stopped. it might just be the adjustment to the new pill... i was also taking them continuously (so as to avoid having an actual period) so i don't know if that contributed or not.
