worried and need to ask help!
May. 1st, 2004 11:14 pmHi,
i am 15, and i was just put on the pill. i was too scared to talk to my doctor about it. when do i start it? i just had my period last week....can i start it now? what will happen if i do, will i skip my period? i really would like to start now. please help me out, i don't know what to do.
also i heard about a needle birth control...what does that do, my friend is on it and she said that i will not get my period anymore if i go on it. well i won't get it for 3 months, is this true?
if someone could give me some advise that would really help!
thanks

Date: 2004-05-02 05:20 pm (UTC)first of all don't be scared to talk to your doctor! as other posters have told you. but yes, the standard thing is to start the pills the sunday after your period starts, because that way you will get on a sunday start schedule. see the pill package information for details, they have a lot of information that you should definitely read as a first-time pill user.
you can get depo-provera, which is a shot, and it's basically just another way of getting the hormones just like the pill. same hormones, but you get them all at once, and yes it does last 3 months. you don't always not get your period if you are on the shot, but it is a common side effect (because while you are pumped full of hormones, your body thinks you are pregnant and therefore you don't bleed).
they usually recommend the shot for if you have trouble remembering to take the pill. if you think this could be a problem though, there are other new options! you ought to look into the nuva ring and the patch, those are both much easier than the pill (the patch needs to be switched every week, the ring every 3 weeks). personally when i am a doctor i will recommend the ring or patch to all my teenage patients, because it's so hard to take a pill at the same time every day when you're young. good luck with it though! it's great not to have to worry about birth control anymore!... enjoy
