[identity profile] namaste21.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] menstrualhut
okay, I'm three weeks away from giving birth, and so I'm sending off to buy some cloth menstrual pads -- I didn't realize they were quite so expensive, but I suppose I'll save later on buying tampons and disposable pads...
anyway, I wanted to ask those of you who use them a few questions before I send off this check...
I'm ordering them from ManyMoons, which is where I found what I thought was the best deal on them... they use to have care and cleaning instructions for these pads on their site, but I don't see that anymore -- I know that you generally soak them in cold water for a day or so, and then wash... can anyone give me any better specifics?
also, I think some of you posted that you only change them about three times a day? do you also wear them at night, and do you find yourself needing to change them during the night? I'm trying to figure out how many, and what absorbancy, I should order. After the baby's born my flow's going to be pretty heavy for a while, but I usually have a regular flow...
any tips, advice, etc., would be much appreciated...
*thanks*

Hi! Congratulations on your baby. My sister is due next week, and we are all very happy also...

I like to talk about cloth pads, so I'll do it again. My flow used to be quite heavy, but I never needed changing pads more than once in the morning, once at night and eventually in the middle of day. I do sleep with them, you just have to wear tight panties, so the pad doesn't move aroud, which might cause leaking.

To wash, I soak them in just water for a day (better if the water starts warm) (plants love this water after you're done wiht it), then I soak with water and soap (dr. Bronner's is better) for a day more and then wash in the machine or by hand. Some people say that if you put a little vinegar in the water they get really white - I tried once and didn't get a good result, maybe I didn't put enough.

That's it, good luck, cloth pads are great!

I never liked them that much. All the soaking and the stinky water. But, they are good for the environment. Some people also say that you can soak them in a jar and use the bloody water to feed your plants. Really, it's true.

They were hard to keep clean. I'd usually run mine through the wash twice.

Then I switched back to tampons.
