Is the Pill an effective way to lessen painful menstrual cramps? I've tried just about every other possible option, but I'm worried that it might not help or that it will cause side effects (weight gain, etc).
It's helped mine incredibly. I used to be completely incapacitated by mine, and now they're managable. I think it must be what cramps are like for a normal person ;) I haven't had terrible side effects either. I gained about 5 pounds, nothing noticable... I didn't change sizes. My skin has actually gotten a bit better too. I love it. But I hear it does vary by person. If you talk to your doctor about your specific needs I bet he or she can find you one with the least possible side effects.
Birth conrtol is a very effective way to lessen menstrual cramps. The side effects, however, vary on the person. I started birth control because of debilitating cramps and I didn't gain any weight. I guess it also depends on the type of birth control.
Oh yes, I noticed a great difference the first month I took them. Some people gain weight, but I haven't. Even if you do, it's not really enough to notice.
I went from periods that lasted 14 days, and were accompanied by cramps so bad that I couldn't move, nausea, vomiting and sometimes fainting to managable, reasonable periods. Oh yeah, and when I started the pill, I lost weight. There are women who gain weight when they start the pill, who lose weight, and who don't find any changes. The average weight gain is under five pounds.
Definitely helped mine. Took a few months before I really noticed a difference, though. Keep in mind there are different kinds of pills... sometimes it takes some trial and error to find the best one for you. I was on Ortho-Tricyclen but switched because it killed my sex drive.
i just started yasmine, this is my second month. the first time i got my period, my cramps were excruciating, so i'm waiting to see how they'll be this month.. but i also had just about every side effect (aside from weight gain) there is possible.. headaches, fatigue, aches and pains, occassional cramps, blah blah blah. but for everyone it's different. the reason i went on yasmine is because it has a mild diuretic in it and i was also scared shitless about gaining weight. so my gyn recommended that. if you're scared too, you may want to get on it. all my side effects are gone now, i think it was just my body getting used to the change in hormones. i couldn't be happier on it now. :)
Being on the pill has made an enormous difference in the whole period experience. No more ovulation pains, 10 day periods with debilitating stay-home-from-school vomiting, fainting cramps. Periods last a max of 5 days now, little aches and pains, nothing like I used to have. And for weight gain, 5 lbs. of water weight which will most likely be lost whenever I choose to go off the pill, the extra lbs., will go too.

But to answer your question, it helps a lot.
