Hey everyone - what a great community, with tons of wise and with-it women! I'm hoping some of you could give me your input on IUDs.

My husband and I do not want to have children until I finish my degree (which is several years away from happening). I have been taking the Pill almost continually since I was sixteen, fourteen years ago. I'm currently taking Apri, and have been having a terrible time with nausea for the past seven months; I swtiched to Apri from a tri-phasal cos I was having headaches. So, not only am I not thrilled with the Pill, but for the past couple of months I've been having trouble remembering to take it on time.

Diaphragms give me UTIs, and the shot makes me nervous (I know two women who gained 15+ pounds and became extremely depressed after starting the shot); I'm not at all sure what to think of Norplant.

I've read about the newly approved IUD Mirena, and am interested. It could be the right method for us, I think, but don't know anyone with personal experience with IUDs.

Anyone willing to put in two cents on IUDs, or other methods, for that matter?

Thank you so much!!!

i have an iud, and i love it!!!!! but, it is usually recommended for women who already have been pregnant. less chance of perforating the uterus since it's stretched or something. talk your doc or midwife about it. the best thing is no hormones to screw your head.

My mother was on the IUD both before and between children (after that my dad got a vasectomy). She was very happy with it. It did give her cramps.

My ob-gyn has said that the cramps are very bad the first couple of months but she didn't say anything about it be recommended for post-pregnancy women. She did say it is only recommended for those in monogamous relationships because if you get a STD it can climb up the IUD string and into your uterus instead of staying in your vagina (this doesn't happen with yeast, though)
