last month, i skipped my placebos to avoid my period during a much anticipated trip to florida. the week went off without a hitch, but upon my return, i started some light spotting. not a big deal, i figured once i had a normal period, it would clean my system out a bit.

so, i started my period monday (after a full TWO weeks of light-medium spotting and cramps). since it started, my cramps have increased sharply and my digestive system has been causing me major trouble. also my flow was bright red and is completely filling my keeper to the line during my 8 hour workday. for those of you without a keeper, this is quite a bit of fluid. this was kind of distressing but i figured it'd even out. well, it's thursday and my flow hasn't slowed much (still filling my keeper about halfway) and it's still *really* bright red. usually by now it's slowed quite a bit and is more brown than red.

does this sound normal at all? i mean, have any of you skipped a period and had a smiliarly painful and/or heavy cycle afterward?

edit: additional info, i am sexually active, dunno if that makes a difference as i am anal about taking my birth control

When you mess with the cycle of your birth control...this is normal. I have had it happen a couple times. I skip my period for an event knowing that at some point i will have a miserable on birth control period. bleeding that seems to go on for forever. Only to correct itself for me when i return to the normal cycle of my bc pills. This is just my experience. It may be different depending on the type of pills and the person.

For the past 8 years I have been taking my pills continuously for six months then having my period.

What I usually do is take the pill for half a year, then go through a 'normal' month - basically, I take the placebos for the week, do the pills again, then placebo, then another six month cycle.

I find the first period after is usually light, but the blood is darker. The next period is 'normal' and I lose the same amount of fluid I would lose taking the pill.

From what you say, I believe this is pretty normal. My doc told me I should worry if I feel unusually tired or dizzy, or have my period for more than ten days in a row, then I'm supposed to head in right away.
