question about ob/gyn appts...
i went to a new ob/gyn for the first time for help with ubercramps + severe pms (mood swings, bloating, etc) that wasn't being solved by over-the-counter meds. she gave me a perscription for lots of ibuprofin, which predictably did absolutely nothing. per her instructions, i scheduled a "problem" appointment to go see her for her to perscribe bc pills. unfortunatly, earlier that day she got sick and went home. i had to re-schedule for over a month away, then on the day of my appt one of her other patients had a baby. this time the apt was two months away, and again someone had a baby. now i've got an apt set for monday, and my period just started (it's not off-schedule, it varies ~3 days and ended up starting on the 4th). will she/is she able to perscribe the pill without examining me (i imagine she won't be doing that since i'm on my period?)? i'm leaving for college mid-august, and at this point i'm considering just going to a clinic.
thanks

some will examine during a period, some won't.

if she already did a pelvic examine when you saw her, she probably won't require one now. however if you have a planned parenthood or some other womens clinic in your area, it might be quicker to get them that way. and possibly cheaper :)

You know, I was having the same problem. It took me like 5 tries to get in to see my doctor. BUT when I finally went yesterday I was still bleeding so she did a breast exam and poked and massaged my abdomen for a minute. She and I talked about pills and patches and she gave me a month supply sample of the patch so I could start asap. I'm going back in for the PAP and whatnot, but at least I got the hormones in my hand before I left.

I mean, you're obviously not pregnant if you're having your period. I would CALL THE OFFICE and tell the receptionist that you'd like to start the pills before you PMS again next month and ask if they'll see you once for a discussion and a waist-up exam, then schedule another quick appointment next week for your PAPsmear. Just explain to them that you really can't imagine going thru this another month and they SHOULD have sympathy for you and get you in.

Now, if your doctor is some kinda emotionless android and they tell you the answer is no, head to planned parenthood and explain your case to them. Tell them that you just would like a 1-month sample pack until you can get in for an actual perscription from your real doc and they might just hand it over.

A doctor can usually do a manual exam during your period. They just can't do a pap smear. If you had an appointment with her recently, she probably already did the pap (?) so that shouldn't be a problem.

If you can't get an appointment with her, going to your college clinic is a good idea. Another idea would be to make an appointment with a gyno that is not an ob/gyn so there's no baby emergencies.

they can do a pap when you have your period, it just is not always as clear. Idealy the best time to get one dane is the week after your period.
