HA! what a wonderful community... I just stumbled upon you guys when I was looking for information about menstural art...

you see, I'm looking for ideas and information on menstrual art...

menstrual blood painting, tampon earrings and the like...

and I'd love ANY AND ALL suggestions, advice, and links you can offer...

as for my information, I'm 18, bisexual, and I'm studying psychology and women's studies as a second year college student, I work at a girls' science camp every summer, and I hope that I can help you as much as you can help me!

in the film 'ghostworld' the main character has to go to summer art class and another student makes this sculpture out of found objects (a tampon in a teacup)... i want to say it was originally done by judy chicago or some other feminist artist but i forget what the end credits say.

i know nothing about menstrual art, however, everytime i see my clots, i want to preserve them and turn them into those icky jellied toys.

Menstrual art was always a very interesting topic. I don't know if this is going to sound strange but I always felt like a life was being lost with every cycle and for awhile it really depressed me. Then the thought of drawing pictures in menstrual blood of my hypothetical children occured to me. Immortalize them on paper. I guess I just feel that I owe it to them.

I've done three mentrual blood paintings now. . .

its made my periods feel very. . .peaceful and beautiful. . .
I look forward to them because i get to paint :)

I use The Keeper to collect my blood and then mix it with white/ iradescent paint, although I'm looking for clear too.

I'm also Bi, and studying psychology :)

It doesn't smell, surprisingly. I was worried about that, and I heard that if you mix it with paint soon enough, it doesn't smell. I really haven't had that problem at all. As for it being a biohazard, menstrual blood can carry STI's. . .I am really careful about cleaning up, and only use my materials for that type of painting (even though I am pretty sure I don't have an sti. . .better to be safe. I think after it dries that it would be incredibly difficult to contract an sti through the painting. Most viruses don't live that long. ..and probably as long as no one puts a mucus membrane in direct contact with it, you're fine.
oh,a nd check out the blood_art community.

I don't really know much on the topic, but I was at a white elephant christmas party (for those that dont know what that is, everyone brings 1 rediculous gift like a gold windbreaker or a faux shrunken head made out of a coconut and you play a game to see which stupid gift you're stuck bringing home) so anyhow someone brought "christmas ornaments" which were simply tampons rolled in glue and covered in glitter. Another woman made slippers out of pads and made little flowers out of tampon wrappers to decorate them with. I thought it was pretty damn funny. I think 2 men ended up with those...

For some reason that reminds me that if you're ever in Detroit...and you're at the Detroit Institute of the Arts...head over to the modern/contemporary art wing. There's this giant painting that looks like a whole mess of colors with a giant 4 foot long bloody tampon in the middle of it. Of course, it's not SUPPOSED to be anything of that nature, but there's no mistaking the similarity.
