This is a wonderful community! It is my first post, so thanks to everyone in advance. From all the comments I've seen, the people here are intelligent and kind.

I've been considering switching to reuseable menstral pads, such as lunapads (http://www.lunapads.com). I can't use tampons for various reasons, and these seem a sound alternative to disposable pads. I was wondering if anyone here used reuseable pads or have used them in the past. What was your experience? Good? Bad? Whatever?

(some info on me: My name is Kate, I'm 19, straight and an English/Art major. I hope I can be of help around this community!)

I'm all helpful today :)

I just finished my first period with the luna pads, and I LOVE THEM.
I'm allergic to the materials in the disposables. My only problem with the double layer deal is that when active, the top (removeable) layer moves too much. I left it on when biking, because I was at the end, and I wasn't flowing - and the top layer was all bunched up at the top of my panties when I finally got home.

That was a bit disconcerting. But I use the DivaCup and use the minis for backup.

Before I decided which one to order first, I had a discussoin with someone on here - lemme see if I can find it for you. There are a few different companies that make them...

I love using cotton pads. They're less trash in my can (and we pay by the bag for trash service here) and less nasty waste in landfills. I don't have nappy rash type reactions or--even worse--allergic reactions, which I've had to commercial pads and "natural" disposable pads. I do use tampons for one or two days of my period, but the rest of the time, I use cotton flannel pads, both bought and homemade.

There's info in the memories here about alternative menstrual products (http://www.livejournal.com/tools/memories.bml?user=menstrualhut&keyword=pads&filter=all), including reusable pads. They don't have their own category, it seems, but there are a few posts marked. :)

[livejournal.com profile] diy_pads had loads of suggestions for making and using homemade pads. There are women on there who vend reuseable pads, too.

The archives for VaginaPagina (http://www.vaginapagina.com/) (on lj at [livejournal.com profile] vaginapagina also have info about reusable pads.

I haven't used LunaPads specifically. I have a few GladRags and lots of homemade pads.

I've never had any issues with smell such that I'd seek a decrease. I know that plastic pads smell stale and that always nagged at me, but the coppery, metallic tang of my blood doesn't irritate me.

I can only use pads on my heaviest days and the cotton pads do wonderfully. On my heaviest days, my cramps are so severe that tampons exacerbate them and I'm not able to wear them without serious pain/cramping. Not to mention, my IBS is triggered by menstruation and I'm running to the bathroom so often that tampons would get in the way big time.

hello!
I use cloth pads and I LOVE love love them. They are so comfortable and are easy to clean. At first I was like, "Oh, they're so expensive" but I tell ya, it sure beats going to the store every month and buying throwaways.

I have used my cloth pads for a couple of years now. I bought them from tlc-pads.com (MUCH CHEAPER and the lady is a sweetheart). I just bought a Divacup, so I shouldn't have to use them too much longer. The only problems I find are that they can be a little thick and the smell is different, but better. Wonderful overall!
