Yasmin

Hi all. I've recently gone on Yasmin to shrink ovarian cysts. I've just completed my first week. I just want to ask some things though. I think the hormones are doing things to me! I guess they do to most people, but i just want to ask how long the side effects will last.

Ok, the most obvious one is that i'm really tearful. It's really bad, yesterday i felt like i was constantly going to burst into tears. I could feel the tears welling up and got that burning in my throat.
Another is that my period just won't stop. It's not heavy, barely even mucus (sorry if that's a bit graphic!), more a red water. It's not really bothering me, i'm expecting that kind of thing.
I've got spots! I don't usually. Maybe one before my period.
My breasts are sore. Usually they're only sore 3 days prior to my period, then as soon as it starts, they stop hurting.
This is a weird one. I'm not sure if it's anything to do with the hormones, but i've never had this before. I just can't seem to drink water! I used to love water, i drink lots of pints a day. But now i take a sip and just feel full. It's a real chore to drink water now. It even feels different when i drink it. I feel a bit like i'm drunk and should drink water, but it just doesn't go down.

All i really want to know is if anyone else here has those side effects from Yasmin, and how long it will be before they pass. Thanks for any help!

I don't really know for sure, and I've never taken Yasmin, but I know that bc in general makes you retain a lot of water, so it's possible that your system feels a little flooded already. Just keep choking it down, and you should feel better in a couple of weeks. If you must, I'd look into some mild water pills (I'd probably take up the issue with the people at the local health food store) and that might help you feel a little less "full".

My doctor told me that when you go on birth control pills, the first 1-3 months are luck of the draw. Your body's adjusting. Obviously, if the side effects becoe unbearable or they continue after three months, seeing a doctor is a good idea.

Unfortunately, one of the most common side effects happens to be mood swings...

You don't have to stay on these pills if they don't work. There are quite a lot of different pills with varying hormone amounts. If you're still having side effects in a couple of months, you can call your doctor about switching.

Until then, good luck on the ide effects petering out on their own!

A gynecologist is a doctor. If your gyno perscribed the pills, that would be who you'd talk to about switching. Choosing birth control pills is a hit or miss science. Hopefully these work out and you don't have to call and have them switched, but don't hesitate to have them switched if the side effects continue past three months!

my second and third weeks on yasmin were tearful too. i got over it, though, and my period wasn't debilitating or anything like it normally is/was :)
