I might as well be kicked out for floodin this community with posts! But Im actually in the hut this time ^_^ Back with yet another question.

My period is freakishly heavy, I wear over-night pads all the time, and they soak so fast I have to change them every time I go to the bathroom, and it always seems to get on the sides of my underwear as well, and many accidents happen. I have to go to school tomorrow, I already missed 3 days due to sickness from before my period and then today from heavyness. Is there anything I can do tomorrow to assure protection? I dont want to have another accident at school. Would wearing both a tampon and a pad work? Or do tampons even do anything for a heavy flow? :( I have a Dr's appointment set up for after this period to go on birth control to get a normal flow. I cant stand this heavy stuff anymore!

Love and Respect to all you girls,

How much do you bleed? If you bleed through more than one super-plus pad or tampon within two hours, there's definately a problem. You didn't say how often you change the pad (my sister only goes to the bathroom twice a day).

Using a pad and a tampon will give you more time before you overflow. Also, if you wear dark colored underwear and slacks (or a dark colored skirt), you won't have to worry about what could happen if you do leak.

Are you in high school? If you ask a teacher permission to use the restroom, they have to give it to you. If there's some reason why they don't do that, have your mother write a note saying that you have medical reasons that you must be excused to the bathroom whenever you ask.

On a sort of unrelated note, even pantyliners make me feel "messy" and I've been spotting for a month so I've been looking for ways to wear them without feeling gross all of the time. No amount of wiping with TP in the school bathroom is going to get rid of that awful dried blood feeling. So my solution is...

*drumroll, please*

Head to the baby/kids area of Walgreens or Meijer in the hygiene section and right where you'd find the disposable baby wipes (in those big plastic buckets), you should find some "To Go Wipes" that are individually wrapped and made for young kiddies. You buy them in packs of like 25...they're like moist towelettes only bigger & antibacterial. That way when you pack up your little care package of tampons or pads or whatever to take to school, you can toss some of those in to "freshen up" the mid-day ickies and you won't have to spend the next 4 hours at your desk stewing in that body goo.

make sure you wear really tight fitting underwear to keep the pad from slipping from side to side and causing leaking.

I second the wearing dark colored pants, but not skirts. The pants will help hold the pad in place.

It might be worth it to try using both a tampon and a pad. I can't see anything wrong with it. The tampon will adsorb some of the flow and the pad will get the rest.

Is it possible for you to rush to classes, then immediately ask your teachers for a pass to the bathroom. You'd only be a minute or two late to class then, if you are able to utilize some of the time from the passing period as well.

protective pants - they are disposable.

I had this same problem in high school. I almost lost my credits due to abscence because of a heavy/painful period. My solution was to have a seperate bag or purse filled with lots of pads and tampons. I would and still do, wear a thick pad as well as a super absorbency tampon to prevent leakage. That way, you can change the tampon when it's full and the pad can catch any excess.
And yeah, stay away from light coloured pants. I was lucky and had my first period when I was wearing tan pants. :S To this day I can't wear light coloured pants even when I'm not mensing just out of fear hahahaha.

Good luck!

the best protection in my opinion is wearing an extra strength tampon (though they make me feel sore inside) and then wearing a pantiliner with wings. you ought to get the kind with wings to protect the sides - i know what you mean and i've ruined so many pairs of underwear! also wearing black underwear helps because as long as you can soak most of the blood out you won't be able to see any stains. i have so many pairs of black underwear for that purpose. but yeah, try using the tampon and pad approach, and good luck at your doctor's appointment! don't let her/him get away before all your questions have been answered! :-)

my best friend had similar problems in high school. she would cramp so bad she coudln't even move and miss at least one day every month for that. not to mention she'd wear a super tampon and overnight pad (at the same time) and had to change them both every hour.
her mother just told her "it's natural, all girls have problems like that when they're young." so she was 20 i think before we got her on birth control. once she started the bc, her cramps were easier to handle and her flow was lessened enough that she can actually go do stuff when she's ragging.
definitely talk to your doc about the BC. i hope it works out for you. but don't be disgruntled if it takes a while to find the right bc. the first kind i took wasn't strong enough. i was on it for about 4 months, then had to wait 3 months to get it out of my system before trying the next one. luckily, the second one worked and i still use it.

NO fun

I understand and can empathize. In high school I always wore overnight pads on heavy days along with a super plus tampon. I kept extra pair of panties and jeans in a bag in my locker just in case and lots of extra pads and tampons in my purse and my bookbag. As a freshman I had my family Dr write a note which only the school nurse had to see (at that age I was embarrased to death of all my teachers knowing all the details). The nurse then issued me a special medical pass allowing me to be late as needed. I just braved it though starting as a sophomore. Hope you feel better soon and gyn is of some help. If I can help any more let me know.

do you not have pads with wings? i'm in the UK but pretty much all night time/super pads have wings, it just makes it that much more secure. that should help with staining and leaks!
