You might bleed while pregnant, but it isn't technically a period. Early on it could be implantation bleeding, later on it could be vanishing twin, a threatened miscarriage, or caused by a delicate cervix, etc, etc, etc.
i had bleeding/spotting when i was pregnant with both my boys. According to the information i was given by both my midwives, approximately 20% of all normal pregnancies experience bleeding of some sort or another.
Spotting is normal, but from what I've heard/read, a full blown period can be a sign of something serious. I'd mention it to your doctor next time you're there (I should mention that I'm assuming you're in this situation since you asked the question) but if it's like a normal "first day" sort of heavy flow I would schedule an emergency appointment and get everything checked out immediately.
I know it's not impossible for that to happen & have everything turn out fine, but it can also be a literal "red flag" that something is wrong.
Having some light bleeding/spotting is common, esp during the first trimester. Some women tend to bleed almost like a period, initially although it is not a period and is far less common than the lighter bleeding.
