IUDs?

So I'm back, asking another question. Thanks in advance for any advice you all can give. I'm assuming this question is appropirate, especially because of the effect on the period. ;)

I was at my doctor this morning discussing options for birth control. She suggested the IUD, specifically Mirena (www.mirena.com). It is normally used for women who have had a child, but apparently can also be used for younger women in a monogamous relationship with no risk of contracting stds. SHe thinks if would be perfect for my situation.

I was wondering if anyone else had experience with Mirena or any other forms of IUD contraceptives. I think it sounds fabulous and am considering having it inserted on my winter break. I just wanted to get some more testimonials. ;)

Thanks again!

personally, i had a horrid skin reacton when mirena was inserted. its RARE though very rare. basically i got blotchy, almost rosacea-like spots on my skin all over. i had to have it taken out and went back on the pill. but as i said, so extremely rare, but worth mentioning.

I've got a Mirena. I've had it for over a month. There's a lot of information about Mirena and copper IUDs in [livejournal.com profile] birthcontrol memories and in the IUD community [livejournal.com profile] iud_divas.

There are a a lot of very happy young women with IUDs hanging out in those two communities!

Ok, there's a few things about IUDs. *if* you get pregnant, you have a higher chance of that pregnancy being ectopic than if you got pregnant and didn't have an IUD. However, both copper and Mirena IUDs have a higher effectiveness rating than hormonal birth control (so it's over 99% effective). The Mirena IUD actually has a higher effectiveness rating than sterilization. So, if you do get pregnant, there's a higher chance of it being ectopic, but there's all together a lower chance of having an ectopic pregnancy because of the increased effectiveness. Did this paragraph make sense?

[livejournal.com profile] iud_divas has an article that was posted within the last 1-2 days that talked a bit about Mirenas.

i've had my Mirena IUD for almost a year and i love it. i got mine post-partum, but my midwife mentioned that she had seen studies about its use with women who had no children with positive results.

my impression was that in europe, they use mirena IUDs all the time in women who haven't had kids, but in our more litigious society doctors are afraid to prescribe them and get sued. another way malpractice fears mess up medical care.

My doctor said that at a conference she was at last spring, a bunch of doctors were recommending the Mirena for young women, since you can't really mess it up (like you can with pills, by forgetting to take them, or barrier methods by putting them on/in wrong)

But she still had to do the CYA thing and tell me that the FDA officially only recommends them for women who are married and have given birth, blah blah blah
