I have a question. Is it possible to get your period yet still be pregnant? I've heard as much, as though your "bleeding" relates to something with the pregnancy but then again I was always told you're not pregnant if you get your period. Could someone please enlighten me?

I've known a few women who experience light bleeding during their first few months of pregnancy -- I'm not sure if this is because the zygote (egg-sperm combo) is not firmly attached or what....
however, it's pretty rare, I believe...so most likely if you've got your normal flow around that same time then you're not pregnant....

YES!

Yes, it is entirely possible to be pregnant and still have "bleeding". Although, the bleeding one can experience in pregnancy is not technically a "period". Before I go on, let me say that if you suspect you are pregnant and are experiencing any bloody show or bleeding-- SEE YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY! You could be experiencing a complication of pregnancy!

Just so you know... to reinforce the fact that you can have a menstrual like discharge in pregnancy: 1 in 5 women experience bleeding during early pregnancy!!

Some of the causes of bleeding in early pregnancy include:

implantation bleeding: this occurs when the blastocyst imbeds itself in the lining of the uterus. THis can somtimes be mistaken for a "light period" because it usually occurs around the time you would have expected your menses.

Placental growth and attachment: sometimes can cause spotting.

Ealry miscarriage: THIS IS WHY YOU SHOULD SEE YOUR DOCTOR IF YOU EVEN SUSPECT YOUR PREGGO!!

Chemical Pregnancy: sometimes you can feel pregnant and have positive symptoms of pregnancy, and then you start bleeding!

On top of those...some women just BLEED when they are pregnant....

So, to answer your original question....of course you can bleed while you are pregnant. If you are sexually active, there's a chance (no matter how small) that even with birth control, you could be pregnant!! Your period is usually a pretty good predictor of things, but if you question it at all....ask your doctor to order a "beta HcG quant" to measure if there is any pregnancy hormone in your blood.

yep...

my mom had three periods while pregnant with me, as well as when she was pregnant with my sisters.

she had a floating uterus, not sure if that was teh reason... since there seems to be no logical one!
