anyhoo, here's my question. one of my friends said that getting your period monthly is bad for the body. i don't think that's true, but i thought i'd ask to see. so is it?

Ummmmm?

One question. Where did your friend get this idea? Women have been having their periods monthly since the beginning of woman. Embrace it!!!

I definitely heard this before. Why bad? because in the "olden days" women were almost always pregnant and therefore didn't get their period monthly like we do now. I have heard from numerous people it's not really healthy for the body, and so some pharmacists will tell you to skip the sugar pills every few months (if on the pill) and only have your period a few times a year.
I don't know how much truth there is to it, but of course everyone having their period monthly seems to be a "newer" thing since women obtained new roles and no longer act as purely child-bearing beings.

Anyway, that's my 2 cents.

I think some wires got crossed between what the idea behind this madness is and what the reality of the situation is.

We have evolved a bit since the "always pregnant and dying young" days, and if it were BAD for us to be period-ing every month we'd all be taking meds to stop it from happening. It's not BAD just like it's not totally UNHEALTHY to take seasonale and skip periods. It's a fairly new thing, but it's been going on like this for enough generations that we know periods every month aren't bad.

there are lots of things that are bad we don't take meds for :P

I was just saying that I heard and it and where from...if you actually read what I wrote I said I didn't know what truth there was to it...
but what do I know, I only see a doctor every fucking week lol. I'll have to bring it up again

I did read what you wrote, and I've heard that before too. It makes sense, but what I'm saying is that not having babies all the time is another part of our human evolution, and while it may be "new" for us to have periods every month it's not bad.

Ah the panic-y attitude of modern americans. Anything new is either really really good or really really bad.

Um, no. Research suggests there may be some benefits to having less, but that doesn't mean that having them is detrimental.

the only times i've heard of the monthly being "bad" is in special health cases. i have one friend who is a hemophiliac (blood doesn't clot) so she's on depo and only has 1 or 2 periods a year. that's just so she doesn't die.
my mom started to get anemic about a year ago, from the large amount of blood loss she was having with each period. but our doctor never suggested skipping periods, just trying to lighten the flow.
I don't think it's bad either way unless there are other health concerns, like with my hemophiliac friend. If you really want to know, talk to your doctor. All you're going to get here is opinions.
