Hey Hey! This is Krystal from Texas and I just joined. I have one big big question: I've been sexually active for two years, I'm 18, and I'm not taking birth control pills, I know, I know, I should!, but that's not what this is about. A couple of weeks before Easter this year my ex- boyfriend and I had sex, when Easter came, one day I started cramping up really bad and it wasn't time for my period yet Istarted about a week later. It lasted for 5 weeks and was really thick and dark. I looked in one of the medical books that come with my set of encyclopedias and it said that if you have your period for a long time and its really dark, you could have experienced a miscarriage. Could that be true, did I have one?

it's decidedly possible ... regardless, girl, you -need- to see a doctor/gynecologist with something like that!!!

... but a doctor can confirm it. And you *really* should see a doctor, because you could have an incomplete miscarriage, or an infection, or it could be something else entirely.

More important than whether you are on the b.c. pill is whether or not you are using any protection at all - respect yourself, girl, and protect yourself!

Hmmmm.....

I've experienced 12 miscarriages, and they've most of them looked like what you just described. However, it could have been something else, maybe another female issue. Did you go to a gyno???

I agree with every person above me. SEE YOUR DOCTOR! If you're 18 you should be seeing one anyway and any female who is sexually active should see one on a regular basis.

Miscarriage?

1) You need to see an ob/gyn. That's a given!! If you are 18 and have been having sex for two years, you should be seeing one and have the confidence to call any time and ask questions such as the one you posted above!! Don't get me wrong...cool enough to ask questions in here, but if this happened in April, and you STILL HAVE NOT seen a doctor and asked this question...you need to take your reproductive health more seriously! :)
2) This far from the situation, it's almost impossible to determine wether you've had a miscarriage. However, from the sound of it... it's a distinct possibility. If you were pregnant and miscarried, five weeks of bleeding and cramping suggests that you may have had an incomplete miscarriage and would've benefited from a D & C.
3) What can you do now? You need to see a doctor who can examine your uterus for size and position. You probably should have a vaginal ultrasound to examine the endometrium (the lining of your uterus) for deformities. You need to be placed on birth control pills and use condoms, to prevent the possibility of pregnancy and therefore, miscarriages!

This is not something to take lightly, as I'm sure you know!! You would hate to find out ten years from now that your fertility has suffered because of something you had done as a teen! Good luck!

certainly...
an incomplete miscarriage occurs when only part of the "products of conception" (fetal tissue, placenta, ect...) are expelled through the vagina. Sometimes,...only pieces of this material are expelled with the bleeding and therefore, have to be removed by D & C.
