i am an asthmatic (moderate to severe; I take sinuglair, serevent, and occasionally flovent when i can stand the side effects), and I tend to get VERY wheezy the last few days before I start my period (aka, right now *wheeze*). do any other asthmatics have this experience? even when i'm on birth control (right now, the pill), this still happens month after month. I read snatches of something somewhere that talked about estrogen (or maybe progesterone)'s effects on asthmatics, but haven't been able to find anything definite. just curious.

Date: 2001-03-19 01:34 pm (UTC)If I take the recommended dosage for Flovent, I tend to get mouth sores, regardless of whether I do the gargling or other crap they recommend you do to avoid such reactions. So I stay away from it unless I know I have lots of strenuous exertion ahead of me (say, a weekend hike or bike ride during allergy season) when my lungs could benefit from the reduced inflammatory action. In those cases I take half the rec. dosage (one puff once a day) for 2-3 days before the event. It does help, and my doctor is OK with this compromise (in fact she was the one to suggest keeping it around for occasions like that, but she hadn't heard anything about a correlation with hormonal changes). Now that I've been on Singulair, everything seems to have lessened and evened out dramatically, except every so often right before I get my period. I was wheezing all towards the end of last week, but as of today (I just started), I'm fine -- go figure =)
