i'm 4 days late already, but have taken 2 pregnancy tests which have both turned out negative.

very strange for me... my periods have always been regular - if anything, coming earlier than expected (my cycle has been 3 weeks and 3 days for the past 6 months or so).

the tests said they were 99% effective... but part of me wonders if it could've been a bad batch or something. the only other abnormality is on-and-off nipple soreness. my husband and i stopped using protection a couple of months ago...

any ideas regarding the reliability of home pregnancy tests?

i'm planning to re-test if it doesn't show up in a few days... maybe i ovulated late so there wasn't enough hormone to be detected yet. or maybe my period is just late for some weird reason, even though i haven't had excessive stress or anything in the past month.

Home tests are EXTREMELY reliable two weeks after conception, so you can safely assume that you are not pregnant. It is more likely that you are simply late this month or skipping a period, perhaps due to stress. Or maybe your body is just on a different cycle this month. It happens frequently. Take another test in a week if you are concerned, but I'd try not to worry (that delays periods too!).

if it's more than a couple weeks late, you might go to the doc... not only can they do very reliable prenancy tests there, but they can figure out what other stuff might be causing you to skip if you're not pregnant.

also, if you might be pregnant, take your vitamins! :) (felt a need to add that, sorry, i'll stop "mommying" now... but it's what i've been hearing about the subject. odd, since my mom knows i have no intent to be pregnant... at least not for awhile!)

Home tests are extremely reliable and they're often the same variety of test that your doctor would use in his office. Most are effective at detecting HcG in your urine the day before you would expect your period. There are many factors that can effect your cycle length... age (if you are young, your cycle will adjust itself about every 6-9 months or so, it seems), stress level, medications, illnesses, ect... there are literally hundreds of things that can cause irregularities.

If you think there is ANY WAY you could be pregnant... (and you mentioned that you may have ovulated late) start taking a daily vitamin with folic acid (won't hurt you even if you're not pregnant). Count thirty-one days from the beginning of your last menstrual cycle and take a home preg. test on that day! If that comes out negative and you are experiencing any symptoms of pregnancy and have not had your menses...call your OB/GYN and request a blood beta-quant HcG test. This blood test can measure ANY amount of HcG in your bloodstream and will give the earliest positive results.

What concerns me is... you aren't sure if you are pregnant. Are you using any form of birth control?? If you are having sex... you need to be on something until you are ready for that test to come back positive!! Abstinence is the ONLY way to NOT get pregnant! (Sorry, the mom in me just had to point that out!).

GOOD LUCK! Relax... you're probably ok this time! :)

SOrry...I didn't mean to imply that you shouldn't get pregnant!! Since you are hoping to be pregnant, I HOPE YOU ARE! :)
