Which would you say is the better of the two to start the pill...on the first day of your period or a sunday start. I only ask because i am supposed to start my ortho tri cyclen lo this month and i was wondering which is better. I started my period today, and if i started today when would i start my period on the pill, like which day of the week? What about if i started sunday start? Thanks a bunch!

I started mine on a sunday, and the gyno said that it was the best way to do it.. But whichever way you do it- it works.

The first time I tried pills I was going to do a sunday start and then my period started on sunday so it ended up being a first-day start and I had bad side effects (both mood and digestive) combined with cramps and mood wonkiness from bleeding... It was like a one-two punch. those pills turned out to suck overall but I swore that if I tried pills again I would wait until the LAST day of my period to start them (and I did this with Yasmin and this was great). I mean, think about it - if you start them on the FIRST day of your period you will get your next period 3 weeks later instead of 4 because the placebo pills start after 3 weeks.

If you don't mind having to wait another week to be able to rely on them for birth control I would DEFINITELY wait for later in your period to start (doesn't even have to be sunday) so as to avoid startup side effects and period symptoms at the same time.

i did a sunday start - the first sunday after my period started.
i always get my period on tuesday. it might be tuesday morning or tuesday night while i'm in bed sleeping, but it always comes on tuesday. some women will start sooner, like monday or sunday.
i like the sunday start because it's easy to chart out on the calendar, and i don't have to put the little sticker in my pill pack to set it on the right day.
it's up to you though. be sure you read the little brochure in your pack so you understand both ways to start.

I'm pretty sure that if you start your bc on the first day of your period, you won't need backup contraception. If you start pills on the Sunday of your period, then I believe you do need backup contraception for the first week. I'm certain this is the case with the patch, and pretty sure it's the same for pills. Double-check the small-print packet that came with the prescription... or just ask the doctor who prescribed it to you. :)

There really isn't a better or worse way, I just sort of planned it based on when was a good time to start my period (i.e. think ahead to next month...if you start your period like this tuesday & start taking the pill then, your period will probably start coming around friday. So maybe a sunday start would be better if like...you see your boyfriend on the weekends or whtever)
