I'm posting this here because it's driving me crazy and I don't know where else to ask.

Ever since I started my period this month (tuesday) I have been unable to hold urine when I have to pee. this has never happened before and only just started on tuesday. three times already i've peed myself and its very distressing. my entire vaginal area also sort of tingles and aches constantly as if i need to pee or is irritated. and its so irritating to me that i cannot sleep

could this be caused by using pads? i have felt VERY uncomfortable on them this month, and they keep sticking to me and rubbing against me.

i have not had sex for a month and when I did it was using condoms.

the problem is that my gyno is in NY and i have no insurance in MA and am still in arguments with the hospital over my last visit, and CANNOT afford to go to the hospital.

I'm really scared. are there any links online that could explain what is happening?

I am in constant uncomfortableness and I'm a major hypocondriac so I am freaking out right now. i worry that this will affect having sex or something. I have no idea what is going on. i can't make it stop, i just constantly feel uncomfortable.

thank you.

You have a UTI aka bladder infection. It is not something to be worried about, however you must get treated for it because, well, you have an infection. Go to a doctor today, ASAP. I noticed you said that you can't go to a hospital, are there any walk-in clinics or women's clinics in your area which give free health care? Bladder infections are painful and annoying, and left too long can cause some serious issues.
The doctor will take a urine sample and give you some anti-biotics to clear it up. You should start to feel better within a day. You should also go out and buy lots of cranberry juice, real cranberry juice (make sure it says 100% real juice). Cranberries help with the infection, and it tastes good :)

It is doubtful that the pads caused it, unless you are keeping the same pad on for your entire period.

I get them quite often, usually two or three times a year.

I just got over one my self

I've heard from other communities and some articles that cranberry juice is better for prevention, because the amount of acid (while good for killing bacteria) can be irritating to the inflamed area. I read an article somewhere about grape juice being just as good antibiotically, but less irritating. I'm not trying to contradict you, but I was just curious as to what you thought because you said you get uti's frequently. Also, can't you have a uti without it having reached your bladder? I thought bladder infections were more serious...again, a legit question from someone who doesn't deal with these that often.

I too often get UTIs, though I usually refer to them as bladder infections. I am not positive whether the two are interchangeable or not, but the symthoms are the same.

I have learned over the last 8 years of getting bladder infections to know when I am beginnign to have one. When I know this, I start drinking cranberry juice like there's no tomorrow. I tried grape once, and it was not as effective. For me, only cranberry juice works, and in large quantities.

A kidney infection is the end result of an untreated UTI. The major sign of a kidney infection, besides shooting pains in the back is a high fever (a typical indication of a raging infection).

Like the poster below me, I interchange UTI and bladder infection. UTI stands for Urinary Tract Infection, so it is not actually the bladder but the highway to and from the bladder where the infection is. I believe that most people call it a bladder infection because the main symptom is the feeling of peeing razor blades, and well, urine comes from the bladder.

I have come to know when a bladder infection is coming, I can feel a slight twinge when I urinate, and I too go out and buy cranberry juice wholesale. As for if the juice is preventative or not, I have no idea. I know that my doctor tells me to drink it, as does my naturopath (and the little chinese doctor I go to for herbal remedies).

You guys were right. Apparently the infection stops with the urethra almost always in men. In women, the bladder's always affected. Learn something new every day, huh?

Yay! That peeing razor blades feeling is not fun. I once broke the toilet paper holder thing due to the pain being so bad. I reach out to grab something and tore the damn thing right off of the wall :)

I try to carry Cranberry pills from the health food store with me all of the time (I keep them in the car) because I notice when I start stressing and eating/sleeping poorly now that I'm on birth control I START to get them once in a while. When I can feel one coming on I start taking I think 6 a day (for "intensive treatment" that's what they reccomend on the bottle) and on regular days (especially those when I know I'm not drinking enough fluids) I try to take one in the morning and one at night.

It really helps and I think I got a bottle of 500 pills for like $13.

Just be careful with cranberry pills and not drinking plenty of fluids with them. They do help prevent UTIs, but can also be rough on the bladder if not helped along by lots of liquids to constantly flush things out.
