“When advertising of sanpro (sanitary towels and tampons) moved out of the private world of women’s magazines into the public sphere of television in the early 1980’s, the ensuing controversy was heated and acrimonious… Channel 4 in 1987 met less public resistence and allowed the word ‘period’ to enter television advertising rhetoric for the first time, but advertisers were still obliged to follow guidelines which, amongst other restrictions, prohibited the showing of the unwrapped product. Even in the 1990’s, advertisements for sanpro are not allowed on British channels (except for Channel 4) at ‘family viewing times’.”
I can't even believe this.
I am currently writing a paper which includes this source. is anyone interested in having me post it under a cut when it is completed?
my working thesis:
It is hard at first to understand how the media could have created a culture of fear about women’s bodies, however, when analyzing the media’s messages about female bodily functions and the female body image, their agenda becomes crystal clear. The media separates the identity of the female body from it’s biologically maternal aspects, and changes it into an icon of sex. The main questions that need to be answered and understood are “how?” and “why?”.
it is a 10 pg paper. and will be finished tonight.
