Question about Diva
Dec. 3rd, 2004 12:36 amIt shouldnt' be difficult to find the website if I decide to go ahead and order it... I've been seriously considering it based on reccomendations I've heard here.
I have two questions about it.
Firstly. I sometimes have very heavy periods, the sort where I stay home so that I can be close to a bathroom at all times, and even then a cough or sneeze can cause a very icky accident. Its only a couple of times a year it gets that bad. Normally I use the instead cup, which works fine with a pantyliner of some sort just to be a little extra careful. But these rare heavy ones, this last time I went through a box of 20 OB Ultra in about 12 hours, and the few that were left of some generic Super. I couldn't use the instead cups because it was just too messy, and the flow was too heavy. I think I heard that the Diva cup can hold 8-10 ounces without being too messy with the remove/cleanup aspect... Is this correct? Would this be a good thing ot have/use for the super heavy periods? It would be nice to not have to let my co-workers know why I keep disappearing to the restroom all day long... (Some of the other girls at work use it as an excuse to call in sick or leave early, so when my boss hears a grumble about cramps or bleeding, he wants to send me home whether I can afford the day off or not.)
Second. When it comes in the mail, what does the actual packaging look like? I've never ordered anything from online, and both of my roommates are male... I'd rather avoid the embarrasment of them knowing what I'd ordered, or my having to explain its purpose....

Date: 2004-12-03 08:42 am (UTC)I grew up in one of those families where we don't talk about things like this, or much of anything at all... my grandma (who raised my sister and I) kept some pads under the bathroom counter and said "someday you'll need these"... the extent of our sex talks were "If you get knocked up, hope you can find a place to live." fights were "If you lose and don't at least mess up the other person, don't bother coming home." drugs were "Don't do it before you're 18." and I wore my first bra for 4 years because I didn't know that it was too small until I got into an accident and gramma helped me get into a hot tub. She thought the stretch marks on my breasts were scratches from the fall I'd taken.
So, yeah... hangups there. I generally only buy tampons if I'm grocery shopping and can toss it into a basket full of other things... Or if its the only thing I need, and I have to have it then... I go into the store wearing headphones because inevitably, especially if the cashier is female, they make some sort of comment that makes me want to deck them. lol... you should have seen me the time I went in to buy a pregnancy test... t he girl tried to strike up a conversation about it, wanting to know if it was a good or bad thing, wanting to know if I'd considered other brands... I shut her up finally by staring at her and saying "I want to know if I need an abortion."
Normally I'm not that crude, but all of my more subtle non-responses and attempts to change the subject had failed... I was even wearing the headphones, and she gestured for me to turn the volume down so that she could talk at me. After my comment, she finally shut up and the woman behind me in line laughed at her for being so dense about it.
Anyway, the point being that I may order it online just to spare myself the experience of having to ask questions of someone who is comfortable enough to turn it into a discussion.

However. When I received my package in the mail, it was in a plain white cardboard envelope thing - but because it came from Canada, which is across ye olde border, it had a tag attached stating that the contents of the package was a "silicone cup."

Date: 2004-12-03 08:35 am (UTC)I think it would work for your heavy times. It does hold more and if removed correctly and carefully, there shouldn't be a mess (maybe on the fingers you used to remove it but that's it).
From the DivaCup site: "The DivaCup™ works very well for women with light or heavy flows. The DivaCup™ holds one full once and the average women only flows about three to four ounces in her entire cycle. For most women the cup is not even half full after 12 hours.
Women with heavy flows will simply need to empty the cup more often. The convenient measurement lines in ounces and millilitres will allow women to actually keep track of how much flow there is, and will finally be able to tell their doctor what is really happening in their cycle.
Many women who suffer from heavy painful periods from conditions such as endometriosis have reported wonderful results with The DivaCup™ as well as less cramping. Since The DivaCup™ sits low in the vaginal canal it does not block the flow from coming out like a tampon does, but allows the flow to come out naturally and simply catches and stores it in the cup."
When it comes in the mail, it was either in a plastic envelope or a little brown box. Either way, there was no way for anyone but me to know what it was. MENSTRUAL CUP is not on the package anywhere :)

Date: 2004-12-03 01:21 pm (UTC)The Mooncup is very similar to the Diva Cup, and I have found that I need to empty it much less often than I used to have to change super plus extra tampons. I have a very heavy flow.
