There have been a lot of posts lately about inducing one's peroid. This has raised a lot of concern for me because of what you are doing to your body. In this day and age there is a lot of impatience and it seems that there are a lot of women that do not want to wait for nature to take its course. But remember that inducing is not the same as regulating. Inducing is forcing the body to do something that it is not ready for.

There is nothing wrong with having your period a few days late.

If you are not having sex, and therefore there is not worry about being pregnant, wait. Something is going on with your body where it is need of a little extra time to work things out. It can be caused by delayed ovulation, stress, sickness, or nutrition differences that you have not taken into account. It happens. I can't think of anything that is always exactly on time. You might think that it is, but is the first day of spring always on the vernal equanox? The calender might say so, but the first day of spring is after the thaw, which can't happen until the weather changes, yadda yadda yadda. There are a lot of things that move your cycles through, and it is okay to let your body do its work naturally.

Bodies like to go at thier own rate.

To change this can cause detrimental issues. Remember that what you take to induce your period is an abortive. An abortive is a toxin. While things like parsley is not seen as a toxin, in great quantities, it can be. And there is a reason why they tell women not to eat it. It can harm the baby! Cause an abortion in the first trimester. Upset the lining of the uterus.

This is not to say that parsley is not a bad thing to eat in small doses. There are culinary and nutritional values. But in small doses.

A lot of people have the misconception that because it is herbal, it is safe. This ideology MUST be trown out of a window, and soon. The most deadly things come from natural substances. Always, ALWAYS, double and triple check any source about what you take into your system because it could make or break you. You wouldn't pick a mushroom up in a forest and eat it strait off, so don't do the same thing with herbal medicines.

Always talk to someone with authority AND experiance when it comes to your health.

I want to point out that a lot of women take birthcontrol, not because they do not wish to become pregnant, but because they are trying to regulate hormone levels. This is FAR healthier then quick fixes because it enables the body to set into a rhythm instead of breaking it. You don't have to go on birthcontrol. There are a lot of herbal remedies that have been used for years by women that have been proven to be healthy, AND it is where pharmesists got the idea for birthcontrol in the first place. The concept did not come from the air, but from the earth.

Mother Nature is neutral. She doesn't care if she hurts or helps. She just is. You decide what to do with her gifts.

So I hope that you all keep this in mind when you read about inducing your menstration, or even taking suplements. We like to look to natural things because over all they are healthier then using man-developed chemicals. Nature acts as its own refiner, so there is less possibility of complications. But medicines are developed using lots of tests, so they know what the outcome is going to be. They test, test, test for complications with people of all medical backgrounds. You can't always say that with herbal remidies because they are just beginning to test them in safe labs, instead of word of mouth. That is why they always say to consult your doctor before starting any new regime.

Your health is the most important thing, so don't do anything that might harm it!

Thankyou! Very well said! I am really tired of this "because it's herbal it must be safe" (and the corralary of "if it is synthetic don't trust it") attitude because my mom subjected me to it during my entire childhood.

I love how people seem to forget that synthetic materials have to come from natural ones (that whole pesky conservation of matter thing) and that in many cases that process purifies the desired substance and makes it easier to study and safer to prescribe within studied tolerances.

Deadly belladonna in nature is a terrible poison which is difficult to control for medical purposes. However numerous chemicals are derived from it which make our lives better (everything from heart medications to the dialating eye drops at the Opthomologist).

not to mention foxglove/digitalis... is that the same thing as belladonna?

this is a really good point and i was just posting about it in vaginapagina... taking a plant substance means you could be taking a bunch of other chemicals at the same time, while a purified medication is standardized.

The main chemical constituant of belladonna that one hears about is atropine, on a quick search it seems that atropine and digitalis are actually sometimes given to counteract eachother.

Both are used in cardiac medicine though.

I agree with what you are saying, there have been a couple of times where my period has been late but not because of anything I had done. When I get excitited about a certian event or something that is coming up or I'm under a lot of stress is when it causes my period to be late or come earlier than usual. I think that you should just let nature do what it does best. When I do get stressed out or anything like that I take a nice long hot bath! it relaxes me so much!

I would like to mention that, in the case of parsley and some other emmenagogues (not abortifacients), attempting to induce a period will not work unless the endrometrium is already there to shed. Otherwise, you're faced with just the side-effects of the herb.
Greater care certainly is neccessary concerning herbal medicine. I'm surprised at the number of intelligent people I hear saying things like "it's natural/herbal so it's safe". Grr.
Excellent post.

Thanks for the post ladieophilia, it has reinforced my belief that is best to just let things be - unless of course it is a major problem.
