MP takes on tampon tax

An NDP MP re-introduced a private members bill Monday that would save women hundreds of dollars in a lifetime on feminine hygiene products.

Winnipeg MP Judy Wasylycia-Leis first introduced the bill last February, but it did not make it into law.

In the House of Commons Monday, she said that charging GST on products used exclusively by women is "unfair and discriminatory. It targets women financially, solely because of our reproductive role.

"It would be of particular value to lower-income women. I urge all members to support this initiative," Ms. Wasylycia-Leis said.

The federal GST is charged on all feminine hygiene products sold in Canada.

However, it may be difficult for the bill to make it into law because government bills take precedence over private members bills in the House of Commons parliamentary process.

An Ontario MPP, Marilyn Churley, also to get the federal government to remove the tax on tampons and sanitary napkins in 2002.

You know, I never thought of it as an extra cost that men didn't have before.

I think that's great though.

I invested in a divacup because I was so sick of buying tampons all the time.

Another reason to be glad that I moved up here, even though I am planning on getting a menstral cup. I just like the idea of not making trash and all that. The less money spent was a bonus. But for all those out there that aren't going to use cups, and use tampons and pads, I do think that it is unfair that they charge us an arm and a leg for them.
