spotting?

my period is late and i hope that i'm not pregnant.
ive been experiencing some VERY light bleeding for the past 3 or so hours.
its not enough blood to fill a pantyliner or pad.

is this my period? or spotting? what exactly is spotting and when do you get it?

spotting is pretty much what it sounds like, a little bit of blood. Spotting can come at any time during the cycle. For instance, if you are on birth control - you can experience spotting which is just a minimal amount of blood for a day or so.

since you're due for your period and seeing a bit of blood I'd say its on it's way.

Some women experience it as a part of pregnancy, but there are MANY other things that can cause spotting - birth control, rough sex, or stress, among others.

You may be thinking of implantation bleeding, which not all pregnant women experience, and which would happen within a week or so of conception - sometimes right around the time a pregnant woman first misses a scheduled period. If your period is very late, this likely isn't implantation bleeding, as it would have happened sooner in your cycle.

Spotting does not mean you're pregnant.

However, you can have light bleeding during implantation, which is when the fertilized egg attaches to the uterine wall 6-12 days after fertilization occured.

But, since this is the normal time you'd be starting your period - I wouldn't worry much about it. The more you stress, the more possibility you have of making your period later or different than it normally is.

Ah forgive me, since your period is late and you're spotting. As I said before it's probably just your period starting.

And to add to what I said, if you've been stressing about being pregnant it's quite possible that it threw your period off.

Since you are already late and are worried - you could take an over the counter pregnancy test.
